Securement for a surgical site marker and deployment device for same
View Patent ↗A method of securing a biopsy marker within a biopsy site includes depositing a marker element within a biopsy site and fixing the marker element within the biopsy site by injecting a securing agent within the biopsy site. Delivery devices for delivering the securing agent to the biopsy site are also disclosed.
1. A method of implanting a marker in a biopsy site, comprising:
positioning a delivery device in a biopsy site, the delivery device comprising an elongate body having a proximal end, a distal end, a lumen extending between the proximal and distal ends, and a filter element disposed in the lumen;
deploying a marker from the delivery device into the biopsy site; and
after deploying the marker, deploying a securing agent from the delivery device into the biopsy site, wherein the securing agent comprises a material that accelerates clotting to substantially limit migration of the marker from the biopsy site,
wherein prior to deploying the securing agent, the securing agent is located in the delivery device lumen, distal of the filter element, and
wherein the filter element is semi-permeable, such that fluid may pass through the filter element, while the securing agent is substantially prevented from passing through the filter element.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the securing agent is in a form selected from the group consisting of slurry, gel powder, pellet, and plug.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the filter element comprises an open cell foam material.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein deploying the securing agent into the biopsy site comprises forcing a fluid through the filter element to thereby deploy the securing agent out of an opening in the distal end of the elongate body.

The method of claim 4 , the delivery device further comprising a duckbill valve disposed in the lumen proximate the distal end opening of the elongate body, wherein the valve is biased to prevent substances external of the elongate body from entering the lumen through the distal end opening, while allowing the securing agent to pass through the valve when subjected to the fluid force.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein deploying the securing agent into the biopsy site comprises applying an actuation force in a distal direction through the lumen to thereby force the securing agent out of an opening in the distal end of the elongate body in communication with the lumen.
7. The method of claim 6 , wherein applying an actuation force comprises directing a fluid in a distal direction through the lumen, wherein the fluid displaces the securing agent out the distal end opening of the elongate body.

The method of claim 7 , the delivery device further comprising a duckbill valve disposed in the lumen proximate the distal end opening of the elongate body, wherein the valve is biased to prevent substances external of the elongate body from entering the lumen through the distal end opening, while allowing the securing agent to pass through the valve when subjected to the fluid force.
