Abstract

A migration management service monitors the resource usage or other behavior factors related to virtual machine instances implementing database functionality and hosted on various physical computing devices. Based on the resource usage associated with the implementation of the database functionality and other behavioral factors, the migration management service identifies a set of target hosted virtual machine instances for possible migration. The migration management service can further identify and prioritize from the set of target hosted virtual machine instances which hosted virtual machine instances may have a greater likelihood to impact the execution of other hosted virtual machine instances being hosted in the same physical computing device. Based on the identification and prioritization, the migration management service can then cause the migration of one or more hosted virtual machine instances unto on a different physical computing device.

Claims (47)

1. A system for the migration of virtual machine instances in a virtual network, comprising:

a computer system including a processor executing software code to implement a migration management service operable to:

monitor a resource metrics of hosted virtual machine instances, wherein the hosted virtual machine instances correspond to hosted database functionality;

determine, based on the monitored resource metrics of the virtual machine instances, a set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances for migration;

prioritize, based on additional information, the set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances by:

determining a minimum service level associated with each of the hosted virtual machine instances,

determining whether a first hosted virtual machine instance is causing another hosted virtual machine instance to violate the minimum service level associated with the another hosted virtual machine instance, and

prioritizing the set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances at least partially on the determination of whether a first hosted virtual machine instance is causing another hosted virtual machine instance to violate the minimum service level associated with the another hosted virtual machine instance; and

cause at least a portion of data associated with one virtual machine instance to be migrated according to the prioritized set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the monitored resource metrics include a type and frequency of database queries.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the migration management service determines the set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances for migration by applying at least one threshold associated with the monitored resource metrics.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein at least one threshold includes a total number of connections to the hosted virtual machine instances.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the migration management service prioritizes the set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances for migration based on at least one threshold associated with the monitored resource metrics.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the migration management service prioritizes the set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances for migration based on a customer associated with the hosted virtual machine instance.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein causing the migration of the prioritized set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances includes creating a binary copy of data associated with the one or more target hosted virtual machine instances.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one virtual machine instance is migrated to a physical computing device hosting no additional virtual machine instances.

9. A method for migrating hosted computing devices in a virtual network, comprising:

monitoring a resource metrics of a plurality of hosted computing devices;

determining based on the monitored resource metrics of the plurality of hosted computing devices, a set of one or more target hosted computing devices for migration;

prioritizing the set of one or more target hosted computing devices by:

determining a minimum service level associated with each of the one or more target hosted computing devices,

determining whether a first target hosted computing device is causing another target hosted computing device to violate the minimum service level associated with the another target hosted computing device, and

prioritizing the set of one or more target hosted computing devices at least partially on the determination of whether a first target hosted computing device is causing another target hosted computing device to violate the minimum service level associated with the another target hosted computing device; and

causing a migration of data associated with at least one hosted computing device according to the prioritized set of one or more target hosted computing devices.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the hosted computing devices correspond to database functionality and wherein the monitored resource metrics include a type and frequency of database queries.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein determining the set of one or more target hosted computing devices for migration includes applying at least one threshold associated with the monitored resource metrics.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one threshold includes a total number of queries to the plurality of hosted computing devices.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein prioritizing the set of one or more target hosted computing devices includes prioritizing the set of one or more target hosted computing devices for migration based on at least one threshold associated with the monitored resource metrics.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein prioritizing the set of one or more target hosted computing devices includes prioritizing the set of one or more target hosted computing devices for migration based on a customer associated with the hosted computing device.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein causing the migration of the prioritized set of one or more target hosted computing devices includes creating a binary copy of data associated with the one or more target hosted computing devices.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein at least one hosted computing device corresponds to a virtual machine instance migrated to a physical computing device hosting no additional virtual machine instances.

17. A non-transitory computer readable medium containing computer-executable instructions for migration of virtual machine instances in a virtual network which, when executed on a computer, generate a system comprising:

a resource monitor module operable to:

monitor a resource metrics of virtual machine instances;

a hosted virtual machine management component operable to:

determine, based on the monitored resource metrics of the virtual machine instance, a set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances for migration;

prioritize, based on additional information, the set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances by:

determining a minimum service level associated with each of the hosted virtual machine instances,

determining whether migrating a first hosted virtual machine instance would violate the minimum service level of the first hosted virtual machine instance, and

prioritizing the set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances at least partially on the determination of whether migrating the first hosted virtual machine instance would violate the minimum service level of the first hosted virtual machine instance; and

an interface module operable to:

in response to receiving a request to cause migration of the virtual machine instance, cause at least one virtual machine instance to be migrated according to the prioritized set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the monitored resource metrics include a type and frequency of database queries.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the hosted virtual machine management component determines the set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances for migration by applying at least one threshold associated with the monitored resource metrics.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the hosted virtual machine management component prioritizes the set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances for migration based on at least one threshold associated with the monitored resource metrics.

21. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the hosted virtual machine management component prioritizes the set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances for migration based on a customer associated with the hosted virtual machine instance.

22. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the interface module causes the migration of the prioritized set of one or more target hosted virtual machine instances includes creating a binary copy of the one or more target hosted virtual machine instances.
