Abstract

Compositions for reducing the formation of dust and methods for making and using same are provided. The composition can include an emulsion comprising one or more pitches, one or more fatty acids, one or more rosins, or any combination thereof. The composition can also include one or more film forming polymers, one or more oils, or a combination thereof.

Claims (32)

1. A composition, comprising:

an emulsion comprising a pitch, fatty acids, rosin acids, or any combination thereof, and about 30 wt % to about 90 wt % water, based on the total weight of the emulsion; and

a film forming polymer comprising a copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride, a copolymer of styrene and maleic acid, or a combination thereof.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the emulsion comprises the pitch, and wherein the composition comprises about 5 wt % to about 40 wt % of the film forming polymer based on the weight of the pitch.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the emulsion comprises the fatty acids, and wherein the composition comprises about 5 wt % to about 40 wt % of the film forming polymer based on the weight of the fatty acids.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the emulsion comprises the rosin acids, and wherein the composition comprises about 5 wt % to about 30 wt % of the film forming polymer based on the weight of the rosin acids.

5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the emulsion comprises the fatty acids and the rosin acids, and wherein the composition comprises about 5 wt % to about 20 wt % of the film forming polymer based on the combined weight of the fatty acids and the rosin acids.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the emulsion comprises the pitch, the fatty acids, and the rosin acids, and wherein the composition comprises about 5 wt % to about 20 wt % of the film forming polymer based on the combined weight of the pitch, the fatty acids, and the rosin acids.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the pitch comprises a bio-based pitch, a petroleum based pitch, or a combination thereof, and wherein the fatty acids and the rosin acids are provided in the form of crude tall oil, derived from crude tall oil, or a combination thereof.

8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the emulsion further comprises water in an amount of about 40 wt % to about 70 wt % based on the total weight of the emulsion.

9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises soybean oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, peanut oil, cotton oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, coconut oil, or any combination thereof.

10. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises one or more mineral oils.

11. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition has a solids concentration of about 25 wt % to about 60 wt %, based on the combined weight of the emulsion and the film forming polymer.

12. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the emulsion comprises the pitch, and the pitch comprises:

fatty acids and esters of fatty acids in a concentration of about 5 wt % to about 55 wt %;

rosin acids and esters of rosin acids in a concentration of about 5 wt % to about 35 wt %; and

neutral materials in a concentration of about 30 wt % to about 90 wt %.

13. The composition of claim 12 , wherein the emulsion comprises the pitch, and the pitch comprises:

fatty acids and esters of fatty acids in a concentration of about 9 wt % to about 40 wt %;

rosin acids and esters of rosin acids in a concentration of about 9 wt % to about 25 wt %; and

neutral materials in a concentration of about 40 wt % to about 80 wt %.

14. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises a phenol-formaldehyde resin, a melamine-formaldehyde resin, a urea-formaldehyde resin, or any combination thereof.

15. A composition, comprising:

an emulsion comprising a tall oil pitch, a crude tall oil, distilled tall oil, tall oil rosin acids, tall oil fatty acids, or any combination thereof, and about 30 wt % to about 90 wt % water, based on the total weight of the emulsion; and

a film forming polymer comprising a copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride, a copolymer of styrene and maleic acid, or a combination thereof.

16. The composition of claim 15 , wherein the composition further comprises soybean oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, peanut oil, cotton oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, coconut oil, or any combination thereof.

17. The composition of claim 15 , wherein the emulsion comprises the tall oil pitch, the tall oil fatty acids, and the tall oil rosin acids, and wherein the composition comprises about 5 wt % to about 20 wt % of the film forming polymer based on the combined weight of the tall oil pitch, the tall oil fatty acids, and the tall oil rosin acids.

18. A composition, comprising:

an emulsion comprising a pitch; and

a film forming polymer comprising a copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride, a copolymer of styrene and maleic acid, or a combination thereof, wherein a concentration of the film forming polymer is about 5 wt % to about 50 wt % based on the weight of the pitch.

19. The composition of claim 18 , wherein the pitch comprises tall oil pitch and the emulsion further comprises water in an amount of about 30 wt % to about 90 wt %, based on the total weight of the emulsion.

20. The composition of claim 18 , wherein the composition further comprises soybean oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, peanut oil, cotton oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, coconut oil, or any combination thereof.
