Abstract

Some embodiments of an infusion pump system can include a controller device that communicates with a pump device, the pump device having a memory device. The controller device can be configured to record controller-related data, such as user profile data on the memory device of the pump device. This user profile data that is stored in the memory of the pump device can serves as a data backup system that permits the user to program a new controller device in a situation where the original controller device is lost or damaged. In addition or in the alternative, the controller device can be configured to receive controller-related data, such as software update programs or backup controller data, from the memory device of the pump device.

Claims (30)

1. A method for an infusion pump system, the method comprising:

transferring user profile information from a first reusable controller device to a first memory device housed within a pump device, the pump device housing a medicine reservoir and a drive system to dispense medicine from the medicine reservoir housed the pump device; and

transferring the user profile information from the first memory device housed within the pump device to a second memory device housed within a second reusable controller device after the second reusable controller device is removably attached to the pump device, the second reusable controller device being different from the first reusable controller device.

2. The method of claim 1 , recording data from the second reusable controller device to the first memory device housed within the pump device after the second reusable controller device is removably attached to the pump device.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

removably attaching the pump device to the first reusable controller device prior to said transferring the user profile information from the first reusable controller device to the first memory device housed within the pump device, wherein the first reusable controller device houses a third memory device storing the user profile information;

after said transferring the user profile information from the first reusable controller device to the first memory device housed within the pump device, detaching the pump device from the first reusable controller device; and

after said detaching the pump device from the first reusable controller device, removably attaching the pump device to said second reusable controller device.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing, in the first memory device housed in the pump device, information related to the amount of medicine in the medicine reservoir housed in the pump device, wherein said information related to the amount of medicine in the medicine reservoir is different from said user profile information.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user profile information includes information entered by a physician or counselor.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user profile information includes the types of medicine that the user is permitted to use.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second reusable controller device comprises: a user interface, and wherein the second memory device stores the user profile information transmitted from the first memory device housed within the pump device after the second reusable controller device is removably attached to the pump device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pump device is a non-reusable, single-use device having one or more structures that prevent reuse of pump device after the medicine in the medicine reservoir is exhausted.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user profile information comprises the user's identifying information.

10. The method of 9 , wherein the user profile information comprises the user's physical characteristics, the user's physical characteristics being different from the user's identifying information.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user profile information comprises at least one the user's blood glucose to insulin ratio, the user's blood glucose to carbohydrate ratio, the user's blood glucose to activity ratio, or the user's basal insulin delivery schedule or profile.

12. A method for an infusion pump system, the method comprising:

removably attaching a pump device to a first reusable controller device, the pump device housing a medicine reservoir and a drive system to dispense medicine from the medicine reservoir of the pump device;

transferring user profile information from the first reusable controller device to a memory device housed within the pump device so as to record the user profile information onto the memory device housed in the pump device;

storing, in the memory device housed in the pump device, information related to the amount of medicine in the medicine reservoir of the pump device, wherein said information related to the amount of medicine in the medicine reservoir is different from said user profile information;

after said transferring the user profile information from the first reusable controller device to the memory device housed within the pump device, detaching the pump device from the first reusable controller device;

after said detaching the pump device from the first reusable controller device, removably attaching the pump device to a second reusable controller device; and

transmitting the user profile information from the memory device to the second reusable controller device after the second reusable controller device is removably attached to the pump device.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the user profile information includes information entered by a physician or counselor.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the user profile information includes the types of medicine that the user is permitted to use.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the reusable controller device comprises: a user interface, and a second memory device housed in the reusable controller device, wherein the second memory device stores the user profile information transmitted from the memory device housed within the pump device after the reusable controller device is removably attached to the pump device.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the pump device is a non-reusable, single-use device having one or more structures that prevent reuse of pump device after the medicine in the medicine reservoir is exhausted.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the user profile information comprises the user's identifying information.

18. The method of 17 , wherein the user profile information comprises the user's physical characteristics, the user's physical characteristics being different from the user's identifying information.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the user profile information comprises at least one the user's blood glucose to insulin ratio, the user's blood glucose to carbohydrate ratio, the user's blood glucose to activity ratio, or the user's basal insulin delivery schedule or profile.
