Abstract

A method of setting an address of a component that includes determining a characterization value associated with a consumable, calculating a number of address change operations based upon the characterization value, and setting a last address generated from the number of address change operations as the new address of the component, wherein the characterization value is determined based upon a usage of the consumable.

Claims (31)

1. A method of setting an address of a component, comprising:

receiving, from a master by component circuitry associated with the component, a series of a plurality of address change requests;

in response to each address change request received, generating, by the component circuitry, a new component address, each new component address generated including a pseudorandom address value, and sending, by the component circuitry, an acknowledgement to the master, each acknowledgement being sent prior to a next address change request of the plurality of address change requests being received by the component circuitry; and

using, by the component circuitry, a last one of the new component addresses generated as the component address for at least one subsequent communication with the master.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a number of address change requests in the series of address change requests is based on an ink or toner level within the component to which the component circuitry is associated.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the number of address change requests is a number selected between a value corresponding to the ink or toner level and a predetermined number.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicatively coupling to the master by the component circuitry, wherein the receiving occurs substantially immediately following the communicatively coupling.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving power to power the component circuitry, wherein the receiving the plurality of address change requests occurs substantially immediately following the receiving power to power the component circuitry.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the component circuitry is connectable to a tank containing toner or ink.

7. Component circuitry, comprising:

an interface for coupling to a master over a shared bus; and

a dynamic address generator coupled to the interface for generating a component address, wherein substantially immediately following a predetermined event and in a continual series of a plurality of address change requests received by the interface and corresponding acknowledgements sent thereby in reply, for each address change request received the dynamic address generator generates a new component address, wherein the component circuitry uses a last one of the new component addresses generated as the component address for one or more subsequent communications with the master.

8. The component circuitry of claim 7 , wherein the predetermined event comprises at least one of the component circuitry being coupled to the master, the component circuitry initially receiving power and the component circuitry being reset.

9. The component circuitry of claim 7 , wherein the component circuitry is connectable to a tank containing toner or ink.

10. The component circuitry of claim 7 , wherein a number of address change requests received and corresponding acknowledgements sent in reply is based on an ink or toner level within a component to which the component circuitry is associated.

11. The component circuitry of claim 10 , wherein the number is a number between a value corresponding to the ink or toner level within the component and a predetermined value.

12. Component circuitry, comprising:

an interface circuit for communicatively coupling with a master; and

a dynamic address generator coupled to the interface circuit for generating a component address, wherein substantially immediately following a predetermined event, the interface circuit receives a plurality of address change requests in succession from the master and, in response to each address change request received, the dynamic address generator generates a new component address and the interface circuit sends to the master an acknowledgement, each acknowledgement being sent before a next address change request in the succession is received by the interface circuit, a last one of the new component addresses generated being used by the component circuitry for one or more subsequent communications with the master.

13. The component circuitry of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined event comprises at least one of the component circuitry being coupled to the master, the component circuitry initially receiving power and the component circuitry being reset.

14. The component circuitry of claim 12 , wherein the component circuitry is connectable to a tank containing toner or ink.

15. The component circuitry of claim 12 , wherein a number of address change requests in the succession thereof is a number between a value corresponding to an ink or toner level within a component to which the component circuitry is associated and a predetermined number.

16. The component circuitry of claim 12 , wherein the component circuitry is connected to a tank containing toner or ink.

17. Component circuitry, comprising:

an interface for coupling to a master over a shared bus; and

a dynamic address generator coupled to the interface for generating a component address, wherein substantially immediately following a predetermined event, the component circuitry performs in succession a plurality of sets of operations, each set of operations comprising receiving by the interface an address change request from the master and generating a new component address by the dynamic address generator in response, wherein the component circuitry uses a last one of the new component addresses generated as the component address for one or more subsequent communications with the master.

18. The component circuitry of claim 17 , wherein each set of operations further comprises sending an acknowledgement to the master by the interface.

19. The component circuitry of claim 17 , wherein the component circuitry is connectable to a tank containing toner or ink.

20. The component circuitry of claim 17 , wherein the predetermined event comprises at least one of the component circuitry being coupled to the master, the component circuitry initially receiving power and the component circuitry being reset.

21. The component circuitry of claim 17 , wherein a number of the plurality of sets of operations is based on an ink or toner level within a component to which the component circuitry is associated.

22. The component circuitry of claim 21 , wherein the number of the plurality of sets of operations is a number between a value corresponding to the ink or toner level and a predetermined number.
