Abstract

A marine seismic surveying apparatus for obstructed waters includes a deployed device and a buoy. The deployed device is disposed at an end of a streamer and is towed below a surface of water. The buoy extends from the end of the streamer to the water's surface. A coupling connects the buoy to the end of the streamer and is breakable due to tension from the buoy obstructed at the surface of the water. A receiver associated with the buoy obtains location information via the buoy at the water's surface. The deployed device can reckon its location with an inertial navigation system in place of location information obtained with the buoy's receiver. Also, the buoy can be deployed at the surface of the water, and more than one buoy can be available for deployment should one be lost.

Claims (35)

1. A marine seismic surveying apparatus for obstructed waters, the apparatus comprising:

a deployed device disposed at an end of a seismic streamer and towed below a surface of water;

at least one buoy extending from the end of the seismic streamer to a surface of the water;

at least one coupling connecting the at least one buoy to the end of the seismic streamer and being breakable due to tension from the at least one buoy obstructed at the surface of the water; and

at least one receiver associated with the buoy and obtaining location information via the at least one buoy at the surface of the water,

wherein the deployed device comprises an inertial navigation system reckoning location of the deployed device in the water in place of the location information obtained with the at least one receiver.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the deployed device produces drag when towed in the water by the seismic streamer.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the deployed device comprises one or more of a propeller, a fin, a drogue, and a reverse propulsion device producing the drag in the water.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising a reel coupled to the streamer and being operable to maintain the streamer at tension in the water.

5. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the deployed device is controllable to vary the produced drag and maintain the streamer at tension in the water.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the deployed device comprises a variable buoyancy system controlling a depth of the deployed device in the water.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the deployed device comprises a movable mass controlling an orientation of the deployed device in the water.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one receiver comprises a global positioning system receiver disposed on the buoy.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the deployed device comprises at least one detector detecting obstructions at the surface of the water.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one coupling comprises at least one line extending from the end of the streamer to the at least one buoy.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the at least one coupling comprises a breakable connection between the at least one line and the deployed device.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the at least one receiver is disposed on the at least one buoy.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the at least one coupling communicates the portion of the at least one receiver disposed on the at least one buoy with the streamer.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the deployed device and the at least one buoy comprise acoustic devices transmitting an acoustic signal in the water therebetween.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the apparatus locates the deployed device relative to the at least one buoy with the acoustic signal and correlates the relative location of the deployed device to the location information obtained with the at least one buoy.

16. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the acoustic device on the at least one buoy communicates the location information obtained via the at least one receiver from the at least one buoy to the deployed device using the acoustic signal.

17. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus comprises an actuator being controllable to deploy the at least one buoy from an undeployed condition at the deployed device to a deployed condition at the surface of the water.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the apparatus comprises a plurality of the at least one buoy; and wherein the actuator deploys an undeployed one of the buoys from the deployed device in response to the coupling of a deployed one of the buoys breaking.

19. A marine seismic surveying apparatus for obstructed waters, the apparatus comprising:

a deployed device disposed at an end of a seismic streamer towed below a surface of water;

a fixed mast extending from the deployed device and being movable on a rotatable connection;

a buoy disposed on the fixed mast and buoyant at a surface of the water; and

a receiver associated with the buoy and obtaining location information via the buoy at the surface of the water.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the deployed device comprises an inertial navigation system reckoning location of the deployed device in the water in place of the location information obtained with the at least one receiver.

21. A marine seismic surveying apparatus for obstructed waters, the apparatus comprising:

a deployed device disposed at an end of a seismic streamer towed below a surface of water;

a reel disposed on the deployed device and being operable to extend or retract a line;

a buoy disposed on the line and buoyant at a surface of the water; and

a receiver associated with the buoy and obtaining location information via the buoy at the surface of the water.

22. The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the deployed device comprises an inertial navigation system reckoning location of the deployed device in the water in place of the location information obtained with the at least one receiver.
