Abstract

An embodiment invention provides a new way of creating a distributed client side user monitoring and attack system for use within the security market. In one embodiment of the invention, a distributed client side user monitoring and attack system, includes: a security application server; a target application server; a target application; and a first code in the target application to permit backchannel communications with the security application server.

Claims (27)

1. A system comprising:

one or more hardware processors configured to implement:

a security application server to provide a first set of instructions to a target application server; and

the target application server to serve the first set of instructions to a target application executed at a client device, the client device separate from the target application server, the first set of instructions to, when executed in the target application at the client device, cause the target application to, in response to a request for an image received at the security application server from the target application, establish a communications link with the security application server, the security application server to provide a second set of instructions to the target application executed at the client device via the communications link, the second set of instructions, when executed, to cause the target application to (1) perform a vulnerability test of the target application server and (2) communicate a result of the vulnerability test to the security application server via the communications link.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the target application, in response to executing the second set of instructions, is further to capture user-related data, and transmit the user-related data from the target application to the security application server via the communications link.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the target application server is to provide the first set of instructions in response to a web request received from the target application.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the vulnerability test is to cause the target application to crawl the target application server.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the communication link is implemented using cross-origin resource sharing.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the target application server is separate from the security application server.

7. A method comprising:

providing a first set of instructions from a security application server to a target application server, the first set of instructions to, when executed, cause a target application executed at a client device to transmit a request for an image to the security application server;

in response to the request for the image, opening a communications connection between the target application and the security application server;

providing, via the communications connection opened in response to the request for the image, with a processor, a second set of instructions to cause the target application to perform a vulnerability test on the target application server and communicate a result of the vulnerability test via the communications connection; and

receiving, via the communications connection opened in response to the request for the image, the result of the vulnerability test from the target application.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second set of instructions cause the target application to capture and transmit user-related data from the target application to the security application server via the communications connection.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the vulnerability test causes the target application to crawl the target application server.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first set of instructions are script instructions embedded in a webpage.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the communications connection is implemented using cross-origin resource sharing.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the target application server is separate from the security application server.

13. A tangible machine-readable storage disk or storage device comprising instructions which, when executed, cause a server to at least:

provide a first set of instructions from a security application server to a target application server, the first set of instructions to, when executed by a target application executed at a client device, the client device separate from the target application server, cause the target application to transmit a request for an image to the security application server;

in response to the request for the image, open a communications connection between the target application and the security application server; and

provide, via the communications connection opened in response to the request for the image, a second set of instructions to, when executed, cause the target application to perform a vulnerability test on the target application server and communicate a result of the vulnerability test via the communications connection; and

receive, via the communications connection opened in response to the request for the image, the result of the vulnerability test from the target application.

14. The tangible machine-readable storage disk or storage device of claim 13 , wherein the second set of instructions cause the target application to capture and transmit user-related data from the target application to the security application server via the communications connection.

15. The tangible machine-readable storage disk or storage device of claim 13 , wherein the second set of instructions, when executed, cause the target application to crawl the target application server.

16. The tangible machine-readable storage disk or storage device of claim 13 , wherein the first set of instructions are script instructions embedded in a webpage.
