Abstract

A portable hand-held multi-function device, such as a smart card or other peripheral device, and method of using same for purchase transactions. The device has processing circuitry, program storage, data memory, and a user input device. A plurality of transaction applications are stored in the data memory. The processing circuitry is programmed via instructions in the program storage to use, as a result of a user selection received via the user input device, one of the plurality of transaction applications for making payment for a purchase from a merchant in a purchase transaction.

Claims (49)

1. A portable multi-function device comprising processing circuitry, program storage, data memory, and a user input device; wherein

a plurality of applications are stored in the data memory, the plurality of applications comprising at least a first payment application comprised of a credit card or a debit card application configured to effect payment from a first financial institution to a merchant and a second payment application comprised of a credit card or a debit card application configured to effect payment from a second financial institution to a merchant, wherein the first financial institution is different from the second financial institution; and

the processing circuitry is programmed via instructions in the program storage to

initially select from a user profile a default application from the plurality of application for making payment to a merchant,

provide an option to override the default application with a different application from the plurality of application,

receive via a user input device on the portable multi-function device a user selection to override the default application with a different application, and

override the default application with the different application selected via the user input device for making payment to the merchant.

2. The portable multi-function device of claim 1 wherein the user input device comprises a button.

3. The portable multi-function device of claim 1 , wherein payment is made to the merchant with rewards previously stored in a reward account stored in the data memory and associated with the selected application.

4. The portable multi-function device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further programmed, based on the purchase transaction, to store rewards to a reward account stored in the data memory and associated with the selected application.

5. The portable multi-function device of claim 1 , wherein the application used for payment to the merchant is a credit card application.

6. The portable multi-function device of claim 1 , wherein the application used for payment to the merchant is a debit card application.

7. The portable multi-function device of claim 1 comprising a smart card.

8. The portable multi-function device of claim 1 comprising a peripheral device.

9. A method of using a portable multi-function device for making a purchase transaction comprising

storing in a data memory of the portable multi-function device a plurality of applications, the plurality of applications comprising at least a first payment application comprised of a credit card or a debit card application configured to effect payment from a first financial institution to a merchant and a second payment application comprised of a credit card or a debit card application configured to effect payment from a second financial institution to a merchant, wherein the first financial institution is different from the second financial institution;

processing circuitry of the portable multi-function device initially selecting from a user profile a default application from the plurality of applications for making payment, to a merchant,

the processing circuitry providing an option to ovenride the default application with a different application from the plurality of application,

the processing circuitry receiving via a user input device on the portable multi-function device a user selection to override the default application with a different application, and

the processing circuitry overriding the default application with the different application selected via the user input device for making payment to the merchant.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the user input device comprises a button.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein payment is made to the merchant with rewards previously stored in a reward account stored in the data memory and associated with the selected application.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising storing, based on the payment to the merchant, rewards to a reward account stored in the data memory and associated with the selected application.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the application used for the payment to the merchant is a credit card application.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the application used for the payment to the merchant is a debit card application.

15. The method of claim 9 wherein the portable multi-function device comprises a smart card.

16. The method of claim 9 wherein the portable multi-function device comprises a peripheral device.

17. In combination, a portable multi-function device and a merchant terminal; wherein

the portable multi-function device comprises processing circuitry, program storage, data memory, and a user input device; wherein

a plurality of applications are stored in the data memory, the plurality of applications comprising at least a first payment application comprised of a credit card or a debit card application configured to effect payment from a first financial institution to a merchant and a second payment application comprised of a credit card or a debit card application configured to effect payment from a second financial institution to a merchant, wherein the first financial institution is different from the second financial institution; and

the processing circuitry is programmed via instructions in the program storage to

initially select from a user profile a default application from the plurality of application for making payment to a merchant,

provide an option to override the default application with a different application from the plurality of application,

receive via a user input device on the portable multi-function device a user selection to override the default application with a different application, and

override the default applicaton with the different application selected via the user input device for making payment to the merchant; and

the merchant terminal comprises

reading circuitry for reading the portable multi-function device,

a display screen, and

an interconnection to a computer network for effecting payment to the merchant using the user-selected application on the portable multi-function device.

18. The combination portable multi-function device and merchant terminal of claim 17 wherein the user input device comprises a button.

19. The combination portable multi-function device and merchant terminal of claim 17 wherein the display screen of the merchant terminal enables user selection of the application from the portable multi-function device.

The combination portable multi-function device and merchant terminal of claim 17 wherein the display screen of the merchant terminal displays an option for payment to be made to the merchant using rewards previously stored in a reward account in the data memory of the portable multi-function device and associated with the selected application.

21. The combination portable multi-function device and merchant terminal of claim 20 wherein the display screen of the merchant terminal displays rewards that may be used for payment to the merchant.

22. The combination portable multi-function device and merchant terminal of claim 17 , wherein payment is made to the merchant with rewards previously stored in a reward account stored in the data memory and associated with the selected application.

23. The combination portable multi-function device and merchant terminal of claim 17 , wherein the processing circuitry is further programmed, based on the payment to the merchant, to store rewards to a reward account stored in the data memory and associated with the selected application.

24. The combination portable multi-function device and merchant terminal of claim 17 , wherein the application used for the payment to the merchant is a credit card application.

25. The combination portable multi-function device and merchant terminal of claim 17 , wherein the application used for the payment to the merchant is a debit card application.

26. The combination portable multi-function device and merchant terminal of claim 17 wherein the portable multi-function device comprises a smart card.

27. The combination portable multi-function device and merchant terminal of claim 17 wherein the portable multi-function device comprises a peripheral device.
