Abstract

The invention provides systems and methods for mounting a fuel system to a vehicle. In some embodiments, the invention provides systems and methods for mounting a fuel system comprising a fuel tank to a vehicle chassis using a bracket, which may be a multi-part bracket, and may be referred to as a “drop and go” bracket.

Claims (26)

1. A drop and go bracket comprising:

a first bracket portion configured to be attached to a vehicle chassis, wherein the first bracket portion includes a groove and a pin at a separate location from the groove; and

a second bracket portion configured to be attached to a vehicle fuel system, wherein the first bracket portion and the second bracket portion are configured to be engaged and connected to one another in a manner that (i) mounts the vehicle fuel system to the vehicle chassis and (ii) prevents substantial translation without rotation between the first bracket portion and the second bracket portion in a lateral direction and in a vertical direction without the aid of additional fasteners, wherein the second bracket portion includes a cut-out configured to engage with the pin of the first bracket portion when part of the second bracket portion slides into the groove of the first bracket.

2. The bracket of claim 1 wherein the portion of the second bracket portion that slides into the groove is a pin.

3. The bracket of claim 1 wherein the first bracket portion and the second bracket portion have flat tops configured to accept a plate flush against the flat tops.

4. The bracket of claim 1 wherein the first bracket portion includes one or more holes or indentations at a top surface of the first bracket.

5. The bracket of claim 4 wherein the second bracket portion includes one or more protrusions configured to be inserted into the one or more holes or indentations.

6. A vehicle fuel mounting system comprising:

a first bracket portion attached to a vehicle chassis, wherein the first bracket portion includes (1) a groove, indentation, or hole and (2) a pin at a separate location from the groove, indentation, or hole; and

a second bracket portion attached to a vehicle fuel system, wherein the first bracket portion and the second bracket portion are configured to be engaged and interlock in order to mount the vehicle fuel system to the vehicle chassis without the aid of additional fasteners, wherein the second bracket portion includes a cut-out configured to engage with the pin of the first bracket portion when part of the second bracket portion slides into the groove, indentation, or hole of the first bracket portion.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the first bracket portion includes the groove and the part of the second bracket portion that engages or interlocks the groove is a pin.

8. The system of claim 6 wherein the first bracket portion and second bracket portion are configured to be movable relative to one another after being engaged only if the first bracket portion rotates relative to the second bracket portion.

9. The system of claim 6 wherein the vehicle fuel system includes one or more tanks containing compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas.

10. A method for mounting a fuel system to a vehicle comprising:

attaching a first bracket portion to a vehicle chassis;

attaching a second bracket portion to a vehicle fuel system;

attaching the second bracket portion attached to the vehicle fuel system to the first bracket portion attached to the vehicle by one or more of the following: (i) sliding a part of the first bracket portion into a cutout, indentation, or hole of the second bracket portion, or (ii) sliding a part of the second bracket portion into a cutout, indentation, or hole of the first bracket portion; and

attaching a plate to both a top surface of the first bracket portion and a top surface of the second bracket portion.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the part of the first bracket portion is a pin, or the part of the second bracket portion is the pin.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein attaching the second bracket portion to the first bracket portion includes sliding the pin of the first bracket into the cutout of the second bracket portion and sliding the pin of the second bracket portion into the cutout of the first bracket portion.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the part of the first bracket portion is a protrusion, or the part of the second bracket portion is a protrusion.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein the second bracket portion is attached to the first bracket portion while the vehicle is on an assembly line.

15. A drop and go bracket comprising:

a first bracket portion configured to be attached to a vehicle chassis, wherein the first bracket portion comprises one or more holes or indentations at a top surface of the first bracket; and

a second bracket portion configured to be attached to a vehicle fuel system, wherein the first bracket portion and the second bracket are configured to be engaged and connected to one another in a manner that (i) mounts the vehicle fuel system to the vehicle chassis and (ii) prevents substantial translation without rotation between the first bracket portion and the second bracket portion in a lateral direction and in a vertical direction without the aid of additional fasteners.

16. The drop and go bracket of claim 15 , wherein the second bracket portion includes one or more protrusions configured to be inserted into the one or more holes or indentations.
