Abstract

An illuminated suction apparatus including a hand-held surgical device combining a high-performance illumination waveguide with suction. This device would be useful in a wide array of various surgical procedures including open and minimally invasive orthopedics.

Claims (46)

1. An illuminated surgical device for illuminating a surgical field in a patient, said device comprising:

a non-optical surgical tool;

a non-fiber optic optical waveguide having an index of refraction, the waveguide having a light input region, a light output region, and a central region between the light input region and light output region;

wherein a shape of the waveguide gradually transitions from a solid rod at the light input region into a crescent shape at the central region then into a hollow tube having a bore at the light output region;

an access opening in communication with the bore;

wherein the non-optical surgical tool is inserted through the access opening and into the bore; and

wherein the waveguide conducts light from the light input region toward the light output region by total internal reflection.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the non-optical surgical tool comprises a suction tube adapted to be connected to a vacuum source.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the suction tube comprises a suction hole for modulating suction strength applied to the surgical field by the suction tube.

4. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a suction lumen disposed in the waveguide for applying vacuum to the surgical field in order to remove fluid or debris therefrom.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide completely surrounds at least a portion of the non-optical surgical tool.

6. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an inner layer of optical cladding having an index of refraction and disposed between the non-optical surgical tool and the waveguide, wherein the index of refraction of the inner layer of optical cladding is less than the index of refraction of the waveguide.

7. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a handle coupled to the non-optical surgical instrument or the waveguide.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein an air gap is disposed between the handle and the waveguide to which the handle is coupled.

9. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an outer layer of optical cladding having an index of refraction and disposed over the waveguide for preserving total internal reflection therein.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the index of refraction of the outer layer of optical cladding is lower than the index of refraction of the waveguide.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the optical waveguide comprises microstructures near the light output region for extracting light therefrom and controlling the extracted light.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the optical waveguide has a cross-section that changes from the light input region to the light output region.

13. The device of claim 1 , where in the optical waveguide is tapered.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the non-fiber optic optical waveguide is formed primarily of cyclo olefin polymer or cyclo olefin copolymer.

15. The device of claim 1 , wherein the central region comprises the access opening.

16. A method of illuminating a surgical field, said method comprising:

providing a non-optical surgical tool with a non-fiber optic optical waveguide coupled thereto, the waveguide having a light input region, a light output region, and a central region between the light input region and the light output region, a shape of the waveguide gradually transitioning from a solid rod at a light input region into a crescent shape at the central region then into a hollow tube having a bore at a light output region, an access opening in communication with the bore, the non-optical surgical tool extending through the access opening at least partially into the bore;

positioning the non-optical surgical tool and the waveguide adjacent the surgical field;

delivering light from the light input region to the light output region by total internal reflection; and

illuminating the surgical field with light from the waveguide.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising preserving total internal reflection in the waveguide by providing an outer layer of optical cladding disposed over the waveguide.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the waveguide has a first index of refraction and the outer layer of optical cladding has a second index of refraction, wherein the second index of refraction is less than the first index of refraction.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the non-optical surgical tool comprises a suction tube and the method further comprises removing fluid and debris from the surgical field with the suction tube.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising modulating suction applied to the surgical field with the suction tube.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the waveguide completely surrounds at least a portion of the non-optical surgical tool thereby providing light around the non-optical surgical tool.

22. The method of claim 16 , further comprising preserving total internal reflection of light passing through the waveguide by providing an inner layer of optical cladding disposed between the non-optical surgical tool and the waveguide.

23. The method of claim 16 , wherein the non-fiber optic optical waveguide is formed primarily of cyclo olefin polymer or cyclo olefin copolymer.

24. The method of claim 16 , wherein the central region comprises the access opening.

25. An illuminated surgical device for illuminating a surgical field in a patient, said device comprising:

a non-optical surgical tool;

a non-fiber optic optical waveguide coupled to the non-optical surgical tool;

the waveguide having a light input region, a light output region, and a central region between the light input region and the light output region;

wherein a shape of the waveguide gradually transitions from a solid rod at the light input region into a crescent shape at the central region then into a hollow tube having a bore at the light output region;

the central region being curved to form an angle Q between the light input region and the light output region, the angle Q being between 150 and 180 degrees; and

wherein the waveguide conducts light from the light input region toward the light output region by total internal reflection.

26. The device of claim 25 , further comprising one or more microstructures on the light output region of the optical waveguide for directing the light to form a preselected illumination pattern.

27. The device of claim 25 , further comprising one or more light extracting structures near the light output region.
