Abstract

A surgical tissue therapy device includes a sealant layer and a collection chamber. The sealant layer functions so as to create a sealed enclosure or space between it and the surface of a patient by forming, preferably, an airtight seal around a surgical area of skin trauma. The closed incision tissue therapy device also comprises a collection chamber, which may comprise an elongate tubular chamber with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings. The collection chamber may be configured to be in fluid communication with the sealant layer and the area of skin trauma and functions as to distribute the negative pressure applied to a surgically closed area of skin trauma. Preferably, the pressure under the sealant layer is reduced by expanding the volume of the enclosure space and thereby decreasing the density of air molecules under the sealant layer. The collection material may comprise a material and/or a configuration that permits length changes based upon the length of the corresponding surgical wound or incision.

Claims (23)

1. A wound treatment device, comprising:

(a) a sealant layer, the sealant layer adapted and configured to seal onto skin around an area of skin having an incision and to form a sealed space around at least a portion of the incision;

(b) a contact layer positioned beneath the sealant layer such that the contact layer is configured to be in direct contact with the skin; and

(c) an elastic element configured to be attached to the skin while held in a state of tension such that the elastic element extends across and over a longitudinal axis of the incision, wherein the elastic element is configured to transmit compression to the skin upon attachment to the skin.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the contact layer comprises a series of openings, the series of openings configured to provide fluid communication between the contact layer and the skin.

3. The device of claim 1 further comprising a one way flow valve, the one way flow valve adapted and configured to facilitate the evacuation of the sealed space.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the one-way flow valve is adapted and configured to facilitate emptying of the sealed space.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the contact layer is adapted and configured to serve as a vehicle for delivery of agents, the agents adapted and configured to improve the healing process.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the contact layer and sealant layer includes a material selected from the group consisting of silver, silver alloy, iodine and chlorhexidine.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the contact layer is a porous dressing interface.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the contact layer is adapted and configured to conform to the length of the area of skin.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sealant layer is adapted and configured to conform to the length of the area of skin.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sealant layer is adapted and configured to be semi-rigid.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sealant layer is adapted and configured to provide tensile support to the area of skin and wherein the tensile support alleviates mechanical tension.

12. The device of claim 1 , further comprising absorbent beads.

13. The device of claim 1 , further comprising antimicrobial agents.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is adapted and configured to deliver reduced pressure between about 0.001 to about 1 atmosphere.

15. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sealant layer comprises a hydrocolloid material.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the sealant layer protects the skin and prevents trapping of fluid under the device.

17. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sealant layer further comprises a release liner adhered to a lower surface of the sealant layer.

18. The device of claim 17 , wherein the sealant layer and release liner are in a rolled configuration and are configured to gradually dispense and separate from each other as the sealant layer seals around the area of skin.

19. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a second sealant layer and a second contact layer wherein the device is configured to be used between a first location of the area of skin to a location remote from the first location.

20. The device of claim 1 , wherein the area of skin is longer than the device and multiple devices are arranged in combination to form a sealed space around the area of skin trauma.
