Abstract

An implantable neurostimulator system for treating movement disorders includes a sensor, a detection subsystem capable of identifying episodes of a movement disorder by analyzing a signal received from the sensor, and a therapy subsystem capable of supplying therapeutic electrical stimulation to treat the movement disorder. The system treats movement disorders by detecting physiological conditions characteristic of an episode of symptoms of the movement disorder and selectively initiating therapy when such conditions are detected.

Claims (30)

1. An implantable neurostimulator for treating a patient comprising:

a sensor interface for receiving sensed physiological signals from at least one sensor, at least one of the sensed physiological signals corresponding to electrical activity of the brain;

a signal processor for conditioning the signals received from the at least one sensor;

a memory;

a detection subsystem adapted to:

analyze the signals conditioned by the signal processor by extracting a set of parameters from the signals,

use the set of extracted parameters to identify a symptom of a movement disorder, the symptom being electrical activity of the brain characterized by a frequency in the range of 3-5 Hz,

store in the memory at least one of the extracted parameters, and

output an indication that the symptom has been identified, the output including a synchronization point; and

a stimulation subsystem adapted to:

receive the output from the detection subsystem indicating that the symptom has been identified,

generate a stimulation waveform according to a set of stimulation parameters, and

deliver the stimulation waveform at a time based on the synchronization point.

The implantable neurostimulator of claim 1 , wherein the set of extracted parameters include parameters corresponding to an early identifiable feature of a burst of tremor and the synchronization point is a reference point corresponding to the time at which the early identifiable feature of the burst of tremor occurs.

The implantable neurostimulator of claim 2 , wherein the synchronization point is used to determine at least one parameter in the set of stimulation parameters including the polarity of one or more pulses in the stimulation waveform, the amplitude of one or more pulses in the stimulation waveform, the frequency of the stimulation waveform, the interpulse interval of the stimulation waveform and the pulse width of the stimulation waveform.

The implantable neurostimulator of claim 1 , wherein one of the parameters in the extracted set of parameters is an amplitude of a signal corresponding to the occurrence of a tremor and at least one of the parameters in the set of stimulation parameters is determined based on the extracted amplitude.

5. The implantable neurostimulator of claim 4 , wherein one of the stimulation parameters determined by the extracted amplitude is the duration of the stimulation waveform.

6. A method for treating a patient with an implantable neurostimulator, said method comprising:

receiving sensed physiological signals, at least one of the sensed physiological signals corresponding to electrical activity of the brain;

conditioning the signals;

analyzing the conditioned signals by extracting a set of parameters from the signals;

using the set of extracted parameters to identify a symptom of a movement disorder, the symptom being electrical activity of the brain characterized by a frequency in the range of 3-5 Hz;

outputting an indication that the symptom has been identified, the output including a synchronization point;

receiving the output from the detection subsystem indicating that the symptom has been identified;

generating a stimulation waveform according to a set of stimulation parameters, and

delivering the stimulation waveform at a time based on the synchronization point.

The method of claim 6 , wherein the set of extracted parameters include parameters corresponding to an early identifiable feature of a burst of tremor and the synchronization point is a reference point corresponding to the time at which the early identifiable feature of the burst of tremor occurs.

The method of claim 7 , wherein the synchronization point is used to determine at least one parameter in the set of stimulation parameters including the polarity of one or more pulses in the stimulation waveform, the amplitude of one or more pulses in the stimulation waveform, the frequency of the stimulation waveform, the interpulse interval of the stimulation waveform and the pulse width of the stimulation waveform.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein one of the parameters in the extracted set of parameters is an amplitude of a signal corresponding to the occurrence of a tremor and at least one of the parameters in the set of stimulation parameters is determined based on the extracted amplitude.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein one of the stimulation parameters determined by the extracted amplitude is the duration of the stimulation waveform.
