Abstract

A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a tuning system for a communication device having an antenna, where the tuning system includes at least one first tunable element connected with at least one radiating element of the antenna for tuning the antenna where the adjusting of the at least one first tunable element is based on at least one of a use case associated with the communication device and location information associated with the communication device, and a matching network having at least one second tunable element coupled at a feed point of the antenna, wherein the matching network receives control signals for adjusting the at least one second tunable element to tune the matching network. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (31)

1. A communication device comprising:

a memory that stores a group of tuning parameters indexed to detected use cases of the communication device;

an antenna having a radiating element and a feedpoint;

a first tunable element directly connected with the radiating element of the antenna for tuning the antenna, wherein a first adjusting of the first tunable element comprises an open loop process and is based on a tuning parameter of the group of tuning parameters that is indexed to a detected use case of the communication device, and wherein a plurality of adjusting operations of the first tunable element, performed after the first adjusting, comprise closed loop processes and are based on measurement of one or more operational parameters of the communication device, wherein the first adjusting of the first tunable element is not based on measurement of the one or more operational parameters; and

a matching network having a second tunable element and being coupled to the feedpoint of the antenna, wherein the matching network receives control signals for adjusting the second tunable element to tune the matching network.

2. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the group of tuning parameters indexed to the use case are stored in a look-up table of the communication device, and wherein the use case comprises at least one of an earpiece speaker status, a speakerphone status, a headset status, or a slider status.

3. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the use case comprises position information obtained from at least one of an accelerometer or a proximity detector of the communication device.

4. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting of the second tunable element is based on measurement of a second operational parameter of the communication device.

5. The communication device of claim 4 , wherein the second operational parameter comprises at least one of output power, return loss, received power, current drain or transmitter linearity.

6. The communication device of claim 4 , wherein the second operational parameter is obtained using a directional coupler connected between the matching network and the antenna or between the matching network and a transceiver of the communication device.

7. The communication device of claim 4 , wherein the second operational parameter is obtained during transmission by a transceiver of the communication device.

8. The communication device of claim 4 , wherein the second operational parameter is obtained using a detector coupled between the antenna and the matching network without using a measuring component coupled between the matching network and a transceiver of the communication device.

9. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein tuning of the first tunable element is switched from the open loop process to the closed loop processes based on an operational parameter of the one or more operational parameters.

10. A communication device comprising:

an antenna having a radiating element and a feedpoint;

a first tunable element directly connected with the radiating element of the antenna for tuning the antenna, wherein adjusting of the first tunable element comprises an initial open loop process and a plurality of subsequent closed loop processes; and

a matching network having a second tunable element and being coupled to the feedpoint of the antenna, wherein the matching network receives control signals for adjusting the second tunable element to tune the matching network, wherein the adjusting of the second tunable element is based on derivative information associated with a detected RF voltage of the communication device, wherein the derivative information is associated with a finite difference of two sequential measurements,

wherein the detected RF voltage is obtained using a directional coupler coupled between the matching network and a transceiver of the communication device.

11. The communication device of claim 10 , wherein the initial open loop process of the adjusting of the first tunable element is based on tuning parameters indexed to a detected use case of the communication device, and wherein the plurality of subsequent closed loop processes of the adjusting of the first tunable element are based on measurement of one or more operational parameters of the communication device.

12. The communication device of claim 11 , wherein the operational parameters comprise output power, return loss, received power, current drain or transmitter linearity.

13. The communication device of claim 11 , wherein the tuning parameters indexed to the use case are stored in a look-up table of the communication device, and wherein the use case comprises at least one of an earpiece speaker status, a speakerphone status, a headset status, or a slider status.

14. The communication device of claim 11 , wherein the use case comprises position information obtained from at least one of an accelerometer or a proximity detector of the communication device.

15. The communication device of claim 10 , wherein at least a portion of the first tunable element and the second tunable element is electrically tunable capacitors.

16. The communication device of claim 10 , wherein Low Band (LB) radiating elements of the antenna are tuned using a different process than is utilized in tuning High Band (HB) radiating elements of the antenna.

17. A method comprising:

initially adjusting a first tunable element using an open loop process based on tuning parameters indexed to a detected use case of a communication device, wherein the first tunable element is directly connected with a radiating element of an antenna of the communication device;

subsequently adjusting the first tunable element, after the initial adjusting, using a plurality of closed loop processes based on measurement of one or more operational parameters of the communication device; and

adjusting a second tunable element of a matching network coupled to a feed point of the antenna, wherein the adjusting of the second tunable element is based on derivative information associated with a detected RF voltage of the communication device, wherein the derivative information is associated with a finite difference of two sequential measurements.
