Abstract

The present invention is directed to a steering apparatus for a vehicle having a including a light element providing indication and warning light signals to the user of the vehicle. The light element can be associated with a PCB mounted to the steering wheel grip for controlling the operation of the light element. The PCB may be thermally coupled to a heat exchange component such that heat from the light element is transferred from the PCB to the steering wheel grip.

Claims (49)

1. A steering apparatus for a vehicle, comprising:

a steering grip configured for gripping to facilitate control of the vehicle;

a light element physically associated with a PCB (printed circuit board); and

the PCB mounted to the steering grip, the PCB thermally coupled to a heat exchange component associated with the steering grip;

wherein the heat exchange component comprises a thermally conductive material configured for transferring heat away from the PCB to a frame of the steering grip.

2. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the heat exchange component comprises at least one of a thermally conductive resin, a thermally conductive epoxy, a thermally conductive polymer, and/or a metal.

3. The steering apparatus of claim 2 , wherein:

the steering grip includes a steering wheel rim, a plurality of spokes and a hub coupled to a steering column,

the frame of the steering grip couples the steering wheel rim, the spokes and the hub,

and at least a portion of the PCB heat is transferred from the steering wheel rim to at least one of the spokes and the hub through the frame.

4. The steering apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the light element is located on at least one of an interior edge, a front face, and a side face of the steering wheel rim.

5. The steering apparatus of claim 4 , wherein a portion of the light element is provided in at least one of a radial direction of the steering wheel rim and a direction around the periphery defined by the steering wheel rim.

6. The steering apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the PCB is located at an upper portion of a diameter of the steering wheel rim.

7. The steering apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising:

a second PCB located at a lower portion of the diameter of the steering wheel rim.

8. The steering apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising:

a third PCB located between the PCB and the second PCB on a right side portion of the steering wheel rim, and

a fourth PCB located between the PCB and the second PCB on a left side portion of the steering wheel rim.

9. The steering apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the PCB is located at a right portion of a diameter of the steering wheel rim, and wherein the steering apparatus further includes a second PCB located at a left portion of the diameter of the steering wheel rim.

10. The steering apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising:

a third PCB located at a lower portion of the diameter of the steering wheel rim.

11. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light element includes a high intensity LED (light-emitting diode).

12. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light element includes at least one of either a single color LED, a bi-color LED, and/or a tri-color LED.

13. The steering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the PCB is configured to provide operation instructions to the light element,

wherein the PCB includes at a first zone and a second zone,

wherein the first zone provides a first signal instruction to a first corresponding light element and the second zone provides a second signal instruction to a second corresponding light element.

14. A steering apparatus for a vehicle, comprising:

a steering grip configured for gripping to facilitate control of the vehicle;

a light element mounted to a PCB (printed circuit board);

the PCB mounted to the steering grip and providing operation instructions to the light element;

an outer lens configured to cover the light element, the outer lens sized and shaped to provide an exterior surface adjacent with an exterior surface of the steering grip, and the outer lens being translucent; and

a brightness enhancing film located between the light element and the outer lens.

15. The steering apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the steering grip includes a steering wheel rim configured to shield the light element from ambient light.

16. The steering apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the outer lens is configured to shield the light element from ambient light.

17. The steering apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising a diffusing film.

18. The steering apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising:

a first diffusing film located between the light element and the brightness enhancing film; and

a second diffusing film located between the brightness enhancing film and the outer lens.

19. The steering apparatus of claim 14 , wherein a daylight warning intensity of the light element is at least 150 nit.

20. The steering apparatus of claim 14 , wherein a nighttime warning intensity of the light element is at least 5 nit.

21. A steering apparatus for a vehicle, comprising:

a steering column;

a steering wheel grip comprising a rim coupled to via spokes and a hub via a frame, the frame being coupled to the steering column; and

a light element including:

a plurality of light emitting sources mounted to a PCB (printed circuit board), and

an outer lens adjacent to an outer surface of the steering wheel rim; and

wherein the light element includes a portion along an inside surface of the steering wheel rim and a portion in a radial direction of the steering wheel rim;

wherein the PCB is mounted to the steering wheel rim and thermally coupled to a heat exchange component associated with the steering wheel rim, wherein the heat exchange component comprises a thermally conductive material configured for transferring heat away from the PCB to the frame;

wherein the PCB provides signal instructions to each of the plurality of light emitting sources.
