Abstract

A system and a method are disclosed for smart zooming content displayed in a pen-based computing system. Content is displayed in a paper strip interface including at least a first and a second paper strip. When the zoom level associated with the content of the first paper strip is changed, the content of the first paper strip is transformed accordingly. A determination is made if applying the same transformation to the content of the second paper strip will cause the content to exceed the boundaries of the second paper strip. If so, then a second transformation is determined and applied to the content of the second paper strip.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first transformation comprises a first scaling component and a first shifting component, wherein applying the second transformation comprises:

determining that the second content cannot fit within the boundary of the second paper strip when the scaling component of the first transformation is applied to the second content and a second shifting component is applied to the second content;

determining a second scaling component based on an amount by which a dimension of the second content will exceed a corresponding dimension of the second paper strip if the first scaling component and the second shifting component is applied to the second content; and

applying the second shifting component and the second scaling component to the second content.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the second shifting component is different than the first shifting component of the first transformation.

7 . The method of claim 1 , repeated for a plurality of second content in second paper strips.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

displaying the paper strip layout comprising the transformed first and second content.

9 . A non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium configured to store instructions, the instructions when executed by a processor cause the processor to:

obtain a paper strip layout comprising a digitally displayed representation of a plurality of paper strips including at least a first paper strip having first content and a second paper strip having second content;

receive a request to adjust a zoom level of the first content of the first paper strip;

apply a first transformation to the first content of the first paper strip to generate transformed first content based on the zoom level;

determine if applying the first transformation to the second content of the second paper strip will cause the second content of the second paper strip to exceed a boundary of the second paper strip; and

responsive to determining that applying the first transformation to the second content of the second paper strip will cause the second content to exceed the boundary of the second paper strip, apply a second transformation to the second content of the second paper strip such that the second content fits within the boundary.

10 . The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the first transformation comprises a first scaling component and a first shifting component, wherein the instructions to apply the second transformation comprise instructions that cause the processor to:

determine that the second content will fit within the boundary of the second paper strip when the scaling component of the first transformation is applied to the second content and a second shifting component is applied to the second content, the second shifting component different than the first shifting component of the first transformation;

apply the scaling component of the first transformation to the second content; and

apply the second shifting component to the second content.

11 . The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the instructions to apply the second shifting component comprise instructions that cause the processor to:

determine a distance by which the second content will exceed the boundary if the first transformation is applied to the second content; and

determine the second shifting component based on the distance.

12 . The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the first transformation comprises a first scaling component and a first shifting component, wherein the instructions to apply the second transformation comprise instructions that cause the processor to:

determine that the second content cannot fit within the boundary of the second paper strip when the scaling component of the first transformation is applied to the second content and a second shifting component is applied to the second content;

determine a second scaling component based on an amount by which a dimension of the second content will exceed a corresponding dimension of the second paper strip if the first scaling component and the second shifting component is applied to the second content; and

apply the second shifting component and the second scaling component to the second content.

13 . The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the second shifting component is different than the first shifting component of the first transformation.
