Abstract

New compositions for and methods of treating ocular hypertension provide for effective treatment of ocular hypertension often using reduced concentrations of active components. Such compositions include a timolol component and a hypotensive lipid component. The present compositions and methods are relatively straightforward, can be easily produced, for example, using conventional manufacturing techniques, and can be easily and conveniently practiced, for example, using application or administration techniques or methodologies which are substantially similar to those employed with prior compositions used to treat ocular hypertension.

Claims (20)

1. A method of treating a patient suffering from ocular hypertension or glaucoma by administering to the patient a composition comprising about 0.5% (w/v) timolol or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof and about 0.03% (w/v) bimatoprost, in a single composition.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is topically administered to the surface of the eye.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wherein the composition produces at least one reduced side effect relative to a second composition comprising the same concentration of bimatoprost but without timolol.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is applied once a day.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a solution.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises benzalkonium chloride.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises sodium phosphate heptahydrate.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises sodium chloride.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition has a pH of about 7.3.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one reduced side effect is conjunctival hyperemia.

11. A method of lowering intraocular pressure in a person with glaucoma or ocular hypertension, the method comprising administering once daily to an eye of the person a first composition comprising about 0.5% (w/v) timolol or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, and from m about 0.03% (w/v) bimatoprost, in a single composition.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the wherein the composition produces at least one reduced side effect relative to a second composition comprising the same concentration of bimatoprost but without timolol.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the composition is applied once a day.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the composition is a solution and is applied to the surface of the eye.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein the composition further comprises benzalkonium chloride.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the composition further comprises sodium phosphate heptahydrate.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the composition further comprises sodium chloride.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the composition has a pH of about 7.3.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the composition comprises 0.68% w/v timolol maleate.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one reduced side effect is conjunctival hyperemia.
