Abstract

A system and method for combining power from DC power sources. Each power source is coupled to a converter. Each converter converts input power to output power by monitoring and maintaining the input power at a maximum power point. Substantially all input power is converted to the output power, and the controlling is performed by allowing output voltage of the converter to vary. The converters are coupled in series. An inverter is connected in parallel with the series connection of the converters and inverts a DC input to the inverter from the converters into an AC output. The inverter maintains the voltage at the inverter input at a desirable voltage by varying the amount of the series current drawn from the converters. The series current and the output power of the converters, determine the output voltage at each converter.

Claims (25)

1. A method comprising:

performing maximum power point tracking of a plurality of power sources connected respectively to inputs of a plurality of power converters;

converting input power received at the inputs of the plurality of power converters to output power on outputs of the plurality of power converters; and

regulating a voltage across a pair of terminals to a fixed constant value, the pair of terminals having connected therebetween, the outputs of the plurality of power converters connected in a series string, current in the series string varying in response to the input power varying and in response to the fixed constant value of the voltage across the pair of terminals.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing the maximum power point tracking by adjusting an input voltage or input current at each of the inputs of the plurality of power converters to maximize power from each of the plurality of power sources.

3. The method of claim 1 , the input power being direct-current input power received from the power sources and the output power being direct-current output power.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of power converters are cascaded buck-boost converters.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising performing the converting with 95%-99% efficiency.

6. The method of claim 3 , further comprising converting, with an inverter, the direct-current output power received at the pair of terminals to alternating-current power.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising regulating, by the inverter with a control loop, the voltage across the pair of terminals to the fixed constant value.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising regulating the voltage across the pair of terminals to the fixed constant value with a shunt regulator coupled across the pair of terminals.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising limiting power output from each respective one of the plurality of power converters to a preset safe level until the plurality of power converters detect a release signal.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing maximum power point tracking of a second plurality of power sources connected respectively to second inputs of a second plurality of power converters, the pair of terminals further having connected therebetween, second outputs of the second plurality of power converters connected in a second series string.

11. A system comprising:

a plurality of power converters configured to track maximum power points of a plurality of power sources connected respectively to inputs of a plurality of power converters and convert input power received at the inputs of the plurality of power converters to output power on outputs of the plurality of power converters; and

a voltage regulator configured to regulate a voltage across a pair of terminals to a fixed constant value, the pair of terminals having connected therebetween, outputs of the plurality of power converters connected in a series string, wherein the plurality of power converters are configured to vary current in the series string in response to the input power varying and in response to the fixed constant value of the voltage across the pair of terminals.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of power converters are further configured to track the maximum power points by adjusting an input voltage or input current at each of the inputs of the plurality of power converters to maximize power from each of the plurality of power sources.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of power converters are configured to convert direct-current input power received from the plurality of power sources to direct-current output power at the outputs of the plurality of power converters.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of power converters are cascaded buck-boost converters.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of power converters are configured to convert the direct-current input power received from the plurality of power sources to the direct-current output power at the outputs of the plurality of power converter with 95%-99% efficiency.
