Abstract

In one aspect, a waste disposal for processing waste may generally include a housing and a motor disposed within the housing. The motor may include a stator and a rotor rotatable relative to the stator. The rotor may include a top wall disposed axially above the stator and a sidewall extending axially from the top wall. The sidewall may extend circumferentially around an outer perimeter of the stator such that the sidewall rotates relative to the stator when the rotor is rotated.

Claims (28)

1 . A waste disposal for processing waste, the waste disposal comprising:

a housing; and

a motor disposed within the housing, the motor comprising a stator and a rotor rotatable relative to the stator, the rotor including a top wall disposed axially above the stator and a sidewall extending axially from the top wall,

wherein the sidewall extends circumferentially around an outer perimeter of the stator such that the sidewall rotates relative to the stator when the rotor is rotated.

2 . The waste disposal of claim 1 , further comprising a cutter plate coupled to the motor via a shaftless connection.

3 . The waste disposal of claim 2 , wherein the cutter plate is coupled directly to the top wall of the rotor or the cutter plate is formed integrally with the top wall of the rotor.

4 . The waste disposal of claim 1 , wherein the rotor further comprises a bottom wall extending radially inwardly from the sidewall, the top and bottom walls together with the sidewall defining a rotor cavity of the rotor.

5 . The waste disposal of claim 4 , wherein the stator is at least partially encased within the rotor cavity.

6 . The waste disposal of claim 4 , wherein the bottom wall extends radially between the sidewall and a bottom portion of the stator at a location adjacent to a bottom wall of the housing.

7 . The waste disposal of claim 1 , further comprising a controller communicatively coupled to the motor, the controller being configured to control the operation of the motor.

8 . The waste disposal of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to receive a feedback signal associated with an operational parameter of the motor, the controller being configured to control the operation of the motor based on the feedback signal.

9 . The waste disposal of claim 8 , wherein the feedback signal comprises at least one of a motor current signal, a rotor position signal or a rotor speed signal.

10 . The waste disposal of claim 8 , wherein the operational parameter comprises at least one of a rotor speed of the motor, a temperature of the motor or a jammed condition of the motor.

11 . A waste disposal for processing waste, the waste disposal comprising:

a housing:

a motor disposed within the housing, the motor comprising a stator and a rotor rotatable relative to the stator, the rotor including a top wall disposed axially above the stator and a sidewall extending axially from the top wall, the sidewall extending circumferentially around the outer perimeter of the stator; and

a cutter plate coupled to the motor via a shaftless connection so that the cutter plate is rotatable with the rotor.

12 . The waste disposal of claim 11 , wherein the cutter plate is coupled directly to the top wall of the rotor.

13 . The waste disposal of claim 11 , wherein the cutter plate is formed integrally with the top wall of the rotor.

14 . The waste disposal of claim 11 , wherein the rotor further comprises a bottom wall extending radially inwardly from the sidewall, the top and bottom walls together with the sidewall defining a rotor cavity.

15 . The waste disposal of claim 14 , wherein the stator is at least partially encased within the rotor cavity.

16 . The waste disposal of claim 14 , wherein the bottom wall extends radially between the sidewall and a bottom portion of the stator at a location adjacent to a bottom wall of the housing.

17 . The waste disposal of claim 1 , further comprising a controller communicatively coupled to the motor, the controller being configured to control the operation of the motor.

18 . The waste disposal of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to receive a feedback signal associated with an operational parameter of the motor, the controller being configured to control the operation of the motor based on the feedback signal.

The waste disposal of claim 18 , wherein the feedback signal comprises at least one of a motor current signal, a rotor position signal or a rotor speed signal and the operational parameter comprises at least one of a rotor speed of the motor, a temperature of the motor or a jammed condition of the motor.

20 . A method for electronically controlling a waste disposal, the method comprising:

receiving a feedback signal associated with an operational parameter of a motor of the waste disposal, the motor comprising a stator and a rotor rotatable relative to the stator, the rotor including a top wall disposed axially above the stator and a sidewall extending axially from the top wall, the sidewall extending circumferentially around an outer perimeter of the stator; and

controlling the operation of the motor based on the feedback signal.
