Abstract

A header block is configured to be attachable to an implantable medical device. The header block includes a header block body and a connection port disposed in the header block body configured to receive an implantable lead. A conductor is disposed in the header block body electrically coupled to the connection port at a first end and connectable at a second end to the implantable medical device. An impeding device is electrically coupled in series along the length of the conductor and disposed within the header block body. The impeding device is configured to raise the high-frequency impedance of the conductor. The impeding device may include a bandstop filter or an L-C tank circuit.

Claims (31)

1 . A header block configured to be attachable to an implantable medical device, comprising:

a header block body;

a conductor disposed in the header block body electrically coupled to an implantable lead at a first end and connectable at a second end to the implantable medical device; and

an impeding device electrically coupled in series along the length of the conductor and disposed within the header block body.

2 . The header block of claim 1 , wherein the impeding device is configured to raise the high-frequency impedance of the conductor.

3 . The header block of claim 2 , wherein the impeding device comprises a bandstop filter.

4 . The header block of claim 3 , wherein the impeding device comprises a self-resonant inductor, wherein a bandstop filter inductance is formed by an insulated coiled or spiral inductor, and wherein a bandstop filter capacitance comprises a parasitic capacitance between adjacent turns of the insulated coiled or spiral inductor.

5 . The header block of claim 3 , wherein the bandstop filter comprises a discrete capacitor in parallel with a discrete inductor.

6 . The header block of claim 2 , wherein the impeding device comprises an inductor.

7 . The header block of claim 1 , wherein the second end of the conductor is connected to a hermetic feedthrough terminal of the implantable medical device.

8 . The header block of claim 7 , wherein the hermetic feedthrough terminal comprises a feedthrough capacitor disposed on a device side of the implantable medical device.

9 . A header block configured to be connectable to an implantable medical device, comprising:

a header block body;

a conductor disposed within the header block body between a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the conductor is connected to a removable or permanent implantable lead and wherein the second end of the conductor is connectable to the implantable medical device or a hermetic feedthrough for the implantable medical device; and

a bandstop filter connected in series along the conductor and disposed within the header block body, the bandstop filter configured to raise the high-frequency impedance of the conductor and comprising a capacitance and an inductance selected to be resonant at or near an MRI RF pulsed frequency or an MRI RF range of pulsed frequencies.

10 . The header block of claim 9 , wherein the bandstop filter comprises a self-resonant inductor, wherein the inductance is formed by an insulated coiled or spiral inductor, and wherein the capacitance comprises a parasitic capacitance between adjacent turns of the insulated coiled or spiral inductor.

11 . The header block of claim 9 , wherein the bandstop filter comprises a discrete capacitor in parallel with a discrete inductor.

12 . The header block of claim 9 , wherein the second end of the conductor is connected to a hermetic feedthrough terminal of the implantable medical device.

13 . The header block of claim 12 , wherein the hermetic feedthrough terminal comprises a feedthrough capacitor disposed on a device side of the implantable medical device.

14 . A header block configured to be connectable to an implantable medical device, comprising:

a header block body;

a conductor disposed within the header block body between a first end and a second end;

an implantable lead connected to the first end of the conductor; and

an impeding device electrically coupled in series along the length of the conductor and disposed within the header block body.

15 . The header block of claim 14 , wherein the impeding device is configured to raise the high-frequency impedance of the conductor.

16 . The header block of claim 15 , wherein the impeding device comprises a bandstop filter.

17 . The header block of claim 16 , wherein the impeding device comprises a self-resonant inductor, wherein a bandstop filter inductance is formed by an insulated coiled or spiral inductor, and wherein a bandstop filter capacitance comprises a parasitic capacitance between adjacent turns of the insulated coiled or spiral inductor.

18 . The header block of claim 16 , wherein the bandstop filter comprises a discrete capacitor in parallel with a discrete inductor.

19 . The header block of claim 15 , wherein the impeding device comprises an inductor.

20 . The header block of claim 14 , wherein the second end of the conductor is connected to a hermetic feedthrough terminal of the implantable medical device.

21 . The header block of claim 20 , wherein the hermetic feedthrough comprises a feedthrough capacitor disposed on a device side of the implantable medical device.
