Abstract

A network element having a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) Node Selection Function for discriminating information in order to determine which core network node a signaling message should be sent comprising: a network interface unit configured to interact with a packet network system; a processor with a memory associated with the network interface unit and adapted to: receive the signaling message from an eNB at a selection function; extract header information from Stream Control Transport Protocol (SCTP) of the signaling message; communicate with a database having a persistent application map to determine if there is an association between the header information and a core network entity; if there is an association, forward the signaling message to a selected core network entity; and determine at the selected core network entity which one of a plurality of core network nodes within a core network pool to route the message based on availability of the plurality of core network nodes.

Claims (52)

a network interface unit configured to interact with a packet network system;

a processor with a memory associated with the network interface unit and adapted to:

receive the signaling message from an eNB at a selection function;

extract header information from Stream Control Transport Protocol (SCTP) of the signaling message;

communicate with a database having a persistent application map to determine if there is an association between the header information and a core network entity;

if there is an association, forward the signaling message to a selected core network entity; and

determine at the selected core network entity which one of a plurality of core network nodes within a core network pool to route the message based on availability of the plurality of core network nodes.

2. The network element of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to route the signaling message based on the load balance among the available plurality of core network nodes.

3. The network element of claim 1 , wherein the selected core network entity continually monitors the availability and load of the plurality of core network nodes.

4. The network element of claim 2 , wherein the selected core network entity monitors the load balance of the plurality of core network nodes by counting the number of signaling messages sent to each of the core network nodes within a predetermined time period and compares this number of the signaling messages to the capacities of the core network nodes.

5. The network element of claim 4 , wherein the selected core network entity further measures the connectivity status and link congestion between the eNB and the core network in determining the load balance.

6. The network element of claim 1 , wherein the selected core network entity is further configured to segregate application specific communications to predetermined core network nodes specifically designated to handle the application specific communications.

7. The network element of claim 1 , when a legacy UE initiating the signal is incapable of indicating which core network is trying to seek service from, the processor is further adapted to:

parse the SCTP of the signaling message to determine NAS identity information;

communicate with the persistent application map database; and

upon finding an association to make the selection decision on behalf of the legacy UE, modify the signaling message to indicate that selection has been made and forward the signaling message to the corresponding selected core network entity.

8. The network element of claim 7 , wherein the processor is further adapted to:

send the signaling message to a plurality of core network entities when no association is found in the persistent application map database; and

create an association between discriminating information in the header information of the signaling message and the selected core network entity.

9. The network element of claim 1 , wherein the selection function and selected core network entity are virtual machines (VMs).

10. The network element of claim 1 , wherein the network element is located at the core network node.

11. A network element having a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) Node Selection Function for discriminating information in order to determine which core network nodes a signaling messages should be sent:

a network interface unit configured to interact with a packet network system;

a processor with a memory associated with the network interface unit and adapted to:

receive the signaling messages from a plurality of eNBs at a plurality of selection functions;

in parallel, extract header information from Stream Control Transport Protocol (SCTP) of the signaling messages;

communicate with a database having a persistent application map to determine if there is an association between the header information and core network entities;

if associations are found, forward the messages to the selected core network entities; and

determine at the selected core network entities which of a plurality of core network nodes within a core network pool to route the messages based on a load balance of the plurality of core network nodes.

12. A method performed with at least one network element having an access network unit interface, a processor and memory, the at least one network element configured to discriminate information in order to determine which core network node a signaling message should be sent comprising:

receiving a message from an eNB at a selection function located in the at least one network element;

extracting header information from Stream Control Transport Protocol (SCTP) of the signaling message;

communicating with a database having a persistent application map to determine if there is an association between the header information and a core network entity;

if there is an association, forwarding the message to a selected core network entity; and

determining at the selected network connection entity which one of a plurality of core network nodes within a core network pool to route the signaling message based on availability of the plurality of core network nodes.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

routing the signaling message based on the load balance among the available plurality of core network nodes.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising:

monitoring the load balance of the plurality of core network nodes by counting the number of signaling messages sent to each of the core network nodes within a predetermined time period and comparing this number of signaling messages to the capacities of the core network nodes.

15. The method of claim 13 further comprising:

measuring the connectivity status and link congestion between the eNB and the core network in determining the load balance.

16. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

segregating application specific communications to predetermined core network nodes specifically designated to process the application specific communication.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein when a legacy UE initiating the signal is incapable of indicating which core network is trying to seek service from then:

parse the SCTP of the signaling message to determine NAS identity information;

communicate with the persistent application map database; and

upon finding an association to make the selection decision on behalf of the legacy UE, modify the signaling message to indicate that selection has been made and forward the signaling message to the corresponding selected core network entity.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

sending the signaling message to a plurality of core network entities when no association is found in the persistent application map database; and

creating an association between discriminating information in the header information of the signaling message and the selected core network entity.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the selection function and selected core network entity are virtual machines (VMs).
