Abstract

A workstation and method for the installation of a pulling head assembly onto one or more conductors of a cabling system are provided. The workstation incorporates one or more of: a conductor clamp that holds the conductors of the cabling system in place during the installation of the pulling head assembly; a cutting guide having indicia marks that indicate the lengths to which to cut the conductors in order to achieve a staggered pattern of pulling eyes attached to the conductors in the pulling head assembly; a stripping tool that is used to remove a portion of the insulation from the terminal end of each conductor so that the end of the conductor may be inserted into the pulling eye; and a crimping tool that is used to crimp the pulling eyes onto the terminal ends of each of the conductors.

Claims (35)

1. A method for installing a pulling head assembly onto one or more conductors utilizing a pulling head assembly workstation, the method comprising:

feeding the one or more conductors onto a cutting guide of the pulling head assembly workstation;

engaging a conductor clamp of the pulling head assembly workstation to hold the one or more conductors in place within the pulling head assembly workstation;

cutting each of the one or more conductors to a respective length for the pulling head assembly;

removing a portion of an insulation from a terminal end of each of the one or more conductors having the insulation using a stripping tool;

moving a crimping tool from a first position along a length of the pulling head assembly workstation to a second position along the length of the pulling head assembly workstation; and

crimping a pulling eye onto the terminal end of each of the one or more conductors using the crimping tool, wherein the respective length to which to cut each of the one or more conductors is determined based on achieving a staggered pattern of pulling eyes when the pulling eyes are crimped onto the one or more conductors.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the staggered pattern of the pulling eyes when the pulling eyes are crimped onto the one or more conductors is achieved using a guide, and wherein the guide comprises a plurality of indicia markings associated with the pulling head assembly workstation.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stripping tool is moveably attached to the pulling head assembly workstation and wherein the stripping tool comprises a plurality of drive motors, each of the plurality of drive motors having a stripping head removably attached that is configured to accommodate a conductor of differing diameter.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the crimping tool is further configured to be rotated 90 degrees such that multiple crimps are made on each of the pulling eyes, wherein the multiple crimps are oriented 90 degrees from each other.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the length of the pulling head assembly workstation extends from a first end of the pulling head assembly workstation to a second end of the pulling head assembly workstation, wherein the conductor clamp is attached to the pulling head assembly workstation at the first end of the pulling head assembly workstation, and wherein the crimping tool is moveable from proximate the first end of the pulling head assembly workstation to proximate the second end of the pulling head assembly workstation.

6. A method comprising:

receiving, at a cutting guide of a workstation, a plurality of conductors;

cutting each of the plurality of conductors to a respective length such that the plurality of conductors are cut in a staggered pattern; and

crimping a pulling eye onto a terminal end of each of at least a portion of the plurality of conductors using a crimping tool of the workstation, wherein the crimping tool is moveable from proximate a first end of the workstation to proximate a second end of the workstation.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein a guide is used when cutting each of the plurality of conductors such that the plurality of conductors are cut in the staggered pattern, and wherein the guide comprises a plurality of indicia markings.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein a guide is used when cutting each of the plurality of conductors such that the plurality of conductors are cut in the staggered pattern, and wherein the guide comprises a template comprising different lengths of material.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising after receiving the plurality of conductors, engaging a clamp of the workstation to hold each of the plurality of conductors in place.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising removing, using a stripping tool of the workstation, a portion of an insulation from the terminal end of the at least a portion of the plurality of conductors.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the stripping tool is moveably attached to the workstation.

12. The method of claim 6 , wherein crimping the pulling eye onto the terminal end of each of the at least a portion of the plurality of conductors comprises:

positioning the crimping tool at a first position on the pulling eye;

crimping, using the crimping tool, the pulling eye at the first position;

rotating the crimping tool to a second position on the pulling eye; and

crimping, using the crimping tool, the pulling eye at the second position, wherein the first position and the second position are rotated from each other.

13. A method comprising:

receiving, at a workstation, a plurality of conductors;

cutting each of the plurality of conductors to a respective length,

installing a pulling eye onto a conductor of the plurality of conductors;

positioning a crimping tool of the workstation at a first position on the pulling eye installed on the conductor;

crimping, using the crimping tool, the pulling eye at the first position;

rotating the crimping tool to a second position on the pulling eye; and

crimping, using the crimping tool, the pulling eye at the second position, wherein the first position and the second position are rotated from each other.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the crimping tool is moveably attached to the workstation.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first position and the second position are rotated 90 degrees from each other.
