Abstract

Systems and methods for sorting electronic messages using attributes of senders or of sender addresses. An electronic messaging server sorts electronic messages using attributes associated with the senders or sender addresses of the electronic messages. The sender addresses and associated attributes are stored in an accept list. A sorting module uses the accept list to sort the electronic messages into various folders. The sorting module can also access other data sources, such as a contact list, to assist in sorting the electronic messages. The attributes can be determined independently of the user or can be set directly by the user. The attributes can also identify a status of a sender such as whether the sender is authorized, unauthorized, or unconfirmed.

Claims (30)

1. An electronic messaging server comprising at least one processor and at least one non-transitory storage medium, the non-transitory storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform operations comprising:

receiving an electronic message sent from a sender and addressed to a recipient;

accessing a plurality of attributes associated with the sender;

accessing a contact list associated with the recipient;

adjusting an attribute from the plurality of attributes based on whether the sender is included in the contact list; and

sorting the electronic message based on the adjusted attribute.

2. The electronic messaging server of claim 1 , wherein the non-transitory storage medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform operations comprising adjusting the attribute to an authorized status when the sender is included in the contact list.

3. The electronic messaging server of claim 1 , wherein the non-transitory storage medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform operations comprising adjusting the attribute to an unauthorized status when the sender is not included in the contact list.

4. The electronic messaging server of claim 3 , wherein the non-transitory storage medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform operations comprising sending a challenge to the sender.

5. The electronic messaging server of claim 4 , wherein the non-transitory storage medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform operations comprising adjusting the attribute to an authorized status when the sender successfully responds to the challenge.

6. The electronic messaging server of claim 1 , wherein the contact list comprises a plurality of addresses of contacts of the recipient.

7. The electronic messaging server of claim 1 , wherein the non-transitory storage medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform operations comprising sorting the electronic message based on the adjusted attribute and another attribute from the plurality of attributes.

8. The electronic messaging server of claim 7 , wherein the non-transitory storage medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform operations comprising delivering the electronic message to a sub-folder associated with the recipient based on the adjusted attribute and the other attribute from the plurality of attributes.

9. The electronic messaging server of claim 7 , wherein the non-transitory storage medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform operations comprising assigning the electronic message a priority level based on the adjusted attribute and the other attribute from the plurality of attributes.

10. The electronic messaging server of claim 1 , wherein the non-transitory storage medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform operations comprising sorting the electronic message based on a domain name associated with the sender.

11. A computer-implemented method, the method comprising the following operations performed by at least one processor:

receiving an electronic message sent from a sender and addressed to a recipient;

accessing a plurality of attributes associated with the sender;

accessing a contact list associated with the recipient;

adjusting an attribute from the plurality of attributes based on whether the sender is included in the contact list; and

sorting the electronic message based on the adjusted attribute.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the operations performed by at least one processor further comprise adjusting the attribute to an authorized status when the sender is included in the contact list.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the operations performed by at least one processor further comprise further comprise adjusting the attribute to an unauthorized status when the sender is not included in the contact list.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 13 , wherein the operations performed by at least one processor further comprise sending a challenge to the sender.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein the operations performed by at least one processor further comprise adjusting the attribute to an authorized status when the sender successfully responds to the challenge.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the contact list comprises a plurality of addresses of contacts of the recipient.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the operations performed by at least one processor further comprise sorting the electronic message based on the adjusted attribute and another attribute from the plurality of attributes.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 17 , wherein the operations performed by at least one processor further comprise delivering the electronic message to a sub-folder associated with the recipient based on the adjusted attribute and the other attribute from the plurality of attributes.

19. The computer-implemented method of claim 17 , wherein the operations performed by at least one processor further comprise assigning the electronic message a priority level based on the adjusted attribute and the other attribute from the plurality of attributes.

20. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the operations performed by at least one processor further comprise sorting the electronic message based on a domain name associated with the sender.
