Abstract

Embodiments relate generally to wearable electrical and electronic hardware, software, wired and wireless network communications, and to wearable/mobile computing devices configured to communicate data. More specifically, disclosed are wearable charging devices, platforms and methods directed to charging, for example, wearable communication devices, such as a headset, among other devices. In some embodiments, a wearable device charger includes a rigid shell, which can include a protective cavity dimensioned to receive a housing of a wearable communication device in a nested state. The wearable device charger also can include a component cavity, including a power reservoir configured to store electric charge for transfer to the wearable communication device, and a translatable coupler that can include a connector configured to removably couple to the wearable communication device. The translatable coupler can be configured to translate the connector from the protective cavity in the nested state to a region external to the protective cavity.

Claims (56)

1 . A method comprising:

determining whether a connector of a wearable charger device is in a first orientation or a second orientation to form a determined orientation;

detecting a device coupled to the connector to identify a detected device;

detecting a nested state of the wearable charger device as a function of the detection of the detected device and the determined orientation of the first orientation and the second orientation;

selecting an external power source from which to draw charge if a connection to the external power source exists, or

selecting a battery in the wearable charger device from which to draw the charge if no connection to the external power source exists; and

transferring the charge to the connector to charge the detected device.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining that the determined orientation is indicative that the connector is oriented toward a protective cavity; and.

detecting an closed state of the wearable charger device.

3 . The method of claim 2 further comprising:

charging the battery in the wearable charger device.

4 . The method of claim 2 further comprising:

detecting a port of the wearable charger device is coupled to an external data source; and

initiating a data connection to communicate data associated with the wearable charger device.

5 . The method of claim 4 further comprising:

transmitting data representing a number of times the connector has switched between the first orientation and the second orientation.

6 . The method of claim 4 further comprising:

transmitting data representing a notification that a battery is unable to maintain a charge above a threshold amount.

7 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

prioritizing charging of either the detected device or the battery in the wearable charger device.

8 . The method of claim 7 wherein prioritizing the charging comprises:

determining that the charging of the detected device takes precedence over the charging of the battery of the wearable charger device;

detecting the detected device is charged; and

initiating the charging of the battery of the wearable charger device.

9 . The method of claim 7 wherein prioritizing the charging comprises:

arbitrating between the charging of both the detected device and the battery of the wearable charger device to maintain a predetermined relationship between charge states.

10 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining whether to initiate charging the detected device depending on a charge state representing an amount of charge in the detected device.

11 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining whether to cease charging the detected device depending on a charge state representing an amount of charge in the detected device.

12 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

tracking a charge state representing an amount of charge in the detected device either

at insertion into the connector, or

at extraction from the connector, or both.

13 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining that the determined orientation is indicative that the connector is oriented toward a region external to a protective cavity; and.

detecting open state of the wearable charger device.

14 . The method of claim 13 further comprising:

sample the connector to determine whether the device is coupled to the connector; and

operate the wearable charger device in a closed state during which the connector is unconnected.

15 . The method of claim 13 further comprising:

determining whether the detected device is authorized to receive either data or power, or both.

16 . The method of claim 15 further comprising:

generating a notification that the detected device is unauthorized to connect to the connector.

17 . The method of claim 15 further comprising:

determining the detected device is authorized based on an identifier.

18 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

implementing an attachment member to facilitate attachment to a user for wearing the wearable charger device.

19 . A wearable charger device comprising:

a translatable coupler;

a connector formed on the translatable coupler;

a state detector configured to determine whether the connector is in a first orientation or a second orientation to identify a determined orientation, to detect a device coupled to the connector to identify a detected device, and to detect a nested state as a function of the detected device and the determined orientation; and

a charge controller configured to prioritize charging of either the detected device or the battery in the wearable charger device, and is further configured to select a port from which to draw charge if a connection exists to an external power source, or a battery in the wearable charger device from which to draw the charge if no connection exists between the port and the external power source, the charge controller further configured to transfer the charge to the connector to charge the detected device.

20 . The wearable charger device comprising:

a usage manager configured to determine whether the detected device is authorized to receive either data or power, or both, and further configured to generate a notification that the detected device is unauthorized to connect to the connector.
