Humeral arthroplasty
View Patent ↗Arthroplasty components include an articular surface and a bone-facing surface. The bone-facing surface includes a concave arrangement of planar surfaces which converge as they approach a middle portion of the articular surface. Instruments and implantation methods are also disclosed.
1. An arthroplasty prosthesis comprising:
an articular surface; and
a bone-facing side opposite the articular surface;
wherein the bone-facing side comprises a concave arrangement of at least three planar surfaces, wherein the at least three planar surfaces converge toward the articular surface, wherein the first planar surface intersects the second planar surface along a first line, wherein the second planar surface intersects the third planar surface along a second line, wherein the third planar surface intersects the first planar surface along a third line, wherein the first, second, and third lines converge together as the first, second, and third lines approach the articular surface, wherein the at least three planar surfaces intersect the articular surface to establish an articular margin of the prosthesis, wherein the articular margin includes an indentation located where a selected one of the at least three planar surfaces intersects the articular surface.
2. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the at least three planar surfaces intersect each other.
3. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein, when the prosthesis is operatively implanted with the bone-facing side facing a prepared humeral head and the articular surface facing into a shoulder joint, the indentation faces and is spaced apart from at least a portion of a rotator cuff.
4. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the bone-facing side comprises a concave arrangement of at least four planar surfaces.
5. The prosthesis of claim 4 , wherein the at least four planar surfaces converge toward the articular surface.
6. The prosthesis of claim 4 , wherein three of the at least four planar surfaces are radially arranged about a remaining one of the at least four planar surfaces.
7. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the articular surface has a shape selected from the group consisting of a spherical shape, an ellipsoid shape, and an ovoid shape.
8. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the at least three planar surfaces converge toward a central portion of the articular surface, wherein the at least three planar surfaces intersect a peripheral portion of the articular surface to establish the articular margin of the prosthesis.
9. An arthroplasty prosthesis comprising:
an articular surface; and
a bone-facing side opposite the articular surface, wherein the bone-facing side comprises a first planar surface, a second planar surface, and a third planar surface, wherein the first, second, and third planar surfaces converge toward a center of the articular surface and diverge toward a perimeter of the articular surface, wherein the first planar surface intersects the second planar surface along a first line, wherein the second planar surface intersects the third planar surface along a second line, wherein the third planar surface intersects the first planar surface along a third line, wherein the first and second lines intersect, wherein the first, second, and third lines converge.
10. The prosthesis of claim 9 , wherein the first, second, and third planar surfaces converge toward the articular surface.
11. The prosthesis of claim 9 , wherein the bone-facing side comprises a fourth planar surface, wherein the fourth planar surface intersects at least one planar surface along a third line, wherein the at least one planar surface is selected from the group consisting of the first, second, and third planar surface.
12. The prosthesis of claim 11 , wherein the first, second, third, and fourth planar surfaces are in a concave arrangement and converge toward the articular surface.
13. The prosthesis of claim 11 , wherein the first, second, and third planar surfaces are radially arranged about the fourth planar surface.
14. The prosthesis of claim 9 , wherein the articular surface has a shape selected from the group consisting of a spherical shape, an ellipsoid shape, and an ovoid shape.
15. An arthroplasty prosthesis comprising:
an articular surface; and
a bone-facing side opposite the articular surface, wherein the bone-facing side comprises a socket with at least three planar side walls, wherein the at least three planar side walls taper inwardly as the socket extends from the bone-facing side toward the articular surface, wherein the at least three planar side walls intersect a perimeter of the articular surface, wherein the at least three planar side walls intersect each other.
16. The prosthesis of claim 15 , wherein the socket comprises a fourth planar wall.
17. The prosthesis of claim 16 , wherein the fourth planar wall is a side wall, wherein the at least three planar side walls and the fourth planar wall converge toward the articular surface.
18. The prosthesis of claim 16 , wherein the at least three planar side walls are radially arranged about the fourth planar wall.
19. The prosthesis of claim 15 , wherein the articular surface has a shape selected from the group consisting of a spherical shape, an ellipsoid shape, and an ovoid shape.
20. The prosthesis of claim 15 , wherein the at least three planar side walls taper inwardly as the socket extends from the bone-facing side toward a central portion of the articular surface.
