Abstract

Bearing assemblies, bearing components and related methods are provided for heavy load applications. In one embodiment, a bearing assembly includes a first bearing apparatus having a base member and a first plurality of polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDCs) on a first surface of the base member, the first plurality of PDCs defining a first collective bearing surface. A second bearing apparatus is configured to engage and slide over the first collective bearing surface. the second bearing apparatus may include a second plurality of PDCs defining a second collective bearing surface. The collective bearing surfaces may be configured to be substantially planar or substantially arcuate. Such bearing assemblies may be implemented in, for example, bridges, roadways, buildings, railways and other structures and machines that may require heavy load bearing support.

Claims (38)

1. A bearing assembly comprising:

a first bearing apparatus having a base member and a first plurality of polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDCs) coupled to the base member, the first plurality of PDCs defining a first collective bearing surface;

a second bearing apparatus configured to engage and laterally slide over the first collective bearing surface;

2. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second bearing apparatus includes a second base member and a second plurality of PDCs coupled to the second base member, the second plurality of PDCs defining a second collective bearing surface configured to engage and slide over the first bearing surface.

3. The bearing assembly of claim 2 , wherein the first collective bearing surface and the second collective bearing surface are both substantially planar or are both substantially arcuate.

4. The bearing assembly of claim 2 , wherein the first collective bearing surface is convex and the second collective bearing surface is concave.

5. The bearing assembly of claim 2 , further comprising polymer member coupled with the base member of the first bearing apparatus.

6. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a bladder at least partially surrounding a portion of the base member of the first bearing apparatus.

7. The bearing assembly of claim 6 , wherein the bladder comprises a corrugated rubber bladder.

8. The bearing assembly of claim 7 , wherein an interior chamber of the bladder is filled at least partially with oil.

9. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a second plurality of PDCs coupled to the base member and defining a second collective bearing surface.

10. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the first plurality of PDCs is disposed in an associated pocket formed in the base member.

11. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the first plurality of PDCs comprises a polycrystalline diamond table disposed on a substrate.

12. The bearing assembly of claim 11 , wherein the polycrystalline diamond table of at least one of the plurality of PDCs includes a region that is substantially void of catalyst material.

13. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of PDCs is substantially cylindrical and exhibits a diameter equal to or less than about 60 millimeters.

14. The bearing assembly of claim 13 , wherein each of the plurality of PDCs is substantially cylindrical and exhibits a diameter of about 13 millimeters to about 19 millimeters.

15. A structure comprising:

a first component;

a first bearing apparatus coupled with the first component, the first bearing apparatus comprising a base member and a first plurality of polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDCs) coupled to the base member, the first plurality of PDCs defining a first collective bearing surface;

a second component;

a second bearing apparatus coupled with the second component, the second bearing apparatus configured to engage and slide over the first collective bearing surface upon relative lateral displacement of at least 50 millimeters of the first component and the second component and upon relative rotation of at least 0.05 radians of the first component and the second component.

16. The structure of claim 15 , wherein the second bearing apparatus includes a second base member and a second plurality of PDCs coupled to the second base member, the second plurality of PDCs defining a second collective bearing surface configured to engage and slide over the first bearing surface.

17. The structure of claim 16 , wherein the first collective bearing surface and the second collective bearing surface are both substantially planar or are both substantially arcuate.

18. The structure of claim 15 , further comprising a bladder at least partially surrounding a portion of the base member of the first bearing apparatus.

19. The structure of claim 15 , wherein each of the first plurality of PDCs is disposed in an associated pocket formed in the base member.

20. The structure of claim 15 , wherein each of the first plurality of PDCs comprises a polycrystalline diamond table disposed on a substrate.

21. The structure of claim 15 , wherein each of the plurality of PDCs is substantially cylindrical and exhibits a diameter of about 13 millimeters to about 19 millimeters.

22. The structure of claim 15 wherein the first component comprises a foundational component.

23. The structure of claim 15 wherein the structure is configured as at least one of a bridge, a roadway and a building.

24. A method of enabling displacement of two different components in a structure, the method comprising:

coupling a first component of the structure to a first bearing apparatus comprising a first plurality of polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDCs) on a first surface of the base member, the first plurality of PDCs defining a first collective bearing surface; and

coupling a second component of the structure to a second bearing apparatus;

laterally displacing a surface of the second component with respect to the first collective bearing surface a distance of at least 50 millimeters while permitting rotation of at least 0.05 radians of the surface of the second component with respect to the first collective bearing surface.

25. The method according to claim 24 , further comprising providing the second bearing apparatus a base member and a second plurality of PDCs on a surface of the base member, the second plurality of PDCs defining a second collective bearing surface configured to engage and slide over the first bearing surface, and wherein engaging a surface of the second component in sliding contact with the first collective bearing surface includes engaging the first collective bearing surface with the second collective bearing surface.
