Abstract

Through the identification of different packet-types, packets can be handled based on an assigned packet handling identifier. This identifier can, for example, enable forwarding of latency-sensitive packets without delay and allow error-sensitive packets to be stored for possible retransmission. In another embodiment, and optionally in conjunction with retransmission protocols including a packet handling identifier, a memory used for retransmission of packets can be shared with other transceiver functionality such as, coding, decoding, interleaving, deinterleaving, error correction, and the like.

Claims (38)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a multicarrier transceiver including a processor and memory operable to:

transmit a packet using a forward error correction encoder and an interleaver, wherein the packet comprises a header field and a plurality of PTM-TC codewords, a plurality of ATM cells or a plurality of Reed-Solomon codewords, and wherein the header field comprises a sequence identifier (SID); and

receive a plurality of messages using a forward error correction decoder and without using a deinterleaver, wherein each message of the plurality of messages is received in a different DMT symbol and wherein at least one message of the plurality of messages includes an acknowledgement (ACK) or a negative acknowledgement (NACK) of the transmitted packet.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the received messages have a higher immunity to noise than the transmitted packet.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is operable to retransmit the packet using the forward error correction encoder and the interleaver.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the message indicates at least one count value associated with the packet.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a linecard that is capable of transporting video, voice and data.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a customer premises equipment that is capable of transporting video, voice and data.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver includes at least one digital signal processor.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver includes at least one ASIC.

9. An apparatus comprising:

a multicarrier transceiver including a processor and memory operable to:

receive a packet using a forward error correction decoder and a deinterleaver, wherein the packet comprises a header field and a plurality of PTM-TC codewords, a plurality of ATM cells or a plurality of Reed-Solomon codewords, and wherein the header field comprises a sequence identifier (SID); and

transmit a plurality of messages using a forward error correction encoder and without using an interleaver, wherein each message of the plurality of messages is transmitted in a different DMT symbol and wherein at least one message of the plurality of messages includes an acknowledgement (ACK) or a negative acknowledgement (NACK) of the received packet.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the transmitted messages have a higher immunity to noise than the received packet.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the transceiver is operable to receive a retransmitted packet using the forward error correction decoder and the deinterleaver.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the message indicates at least one count value associated with the packet.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is a linecard that is capable of transporting video, voice and data.

14. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is a customer premises equipment that is capable of transporting video, voice and data.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the transceiver includes at least one digital signal processor.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the transceiver includes at least one ASIC.

17. A method, in a multicarrier transceiver, comprising:

transmitting a packet using a forward error correction encoder and an interleaver, wherein the packet comprises a header field and a plurality of PTM-TC codewords, a plurality of ATM cells or a plurality of Reed-Solomon codewords, and wherein the header field comprises a sequence identifier (SID); and

receiving a plurality of messages using a forward error correction decoder and without using a deinterleaver, wherein each message of the plurality of messages is received in a different DMT symbol and wherein at least one message of the plurality of messages includes an acknowledgement (ACK) or a negative acknowledgement (NACK) of the transmitted packet.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the received messages have a higher immunity to noise than the transmitted packet.

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising retransmitting the packet using the forward error correction encoder and the interleaver.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the message indicates at least one count value associated with the packet.

21. The method of claim 17 , wherein the method is performed in a linecard that is transporting video, voice and data.

22. The method of claim 17 , wherein the method is performed in a customer premises equipment that is transporting video, voice and data.

23. A method, in a multicarrier transceiver, comprising:

receiving a packet using a forward error correction decoder and a deinterleaver, wherein the packet comprises a header field and a plurality of PTM-TC codewords, a plurality of ATM cells or a plurality of Reed-Solomon codewords, and wherein the header field comprises a sequence identifier (SID); and

transmitting a plurality of messages using a forward error correction encoder and without using an interleaver, wherein each message of the plurality of messages is transmitted in a different DMT symbol and wherein at least one message of the plurality of messages includes an acknowledgement (ACK) or a negative acknowledgement (HACK) of the received packet.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein the transmitted messages have a higher immunity to noise than the received packet.

25. The method of claim 23 , further comprising receiving a retransmitted packet using the forward error correction decoder and the deinterleaver.

26. The method of claim 23 , wherein the message indicates at least one count value associated with the packet.

27. The method of claim 23 , wherein the method is performed in a linecard that is transporting video, voice and data.

28. The method of claim 23 , wherein the method is performed in a customer premises equipment that is transporting video, voice and data.
