Abstract

To limit use of content, when a source receives a request for transmitting content from a sink, the source performs an authentication process. When the authentication is successful, the source transmits to the sink key information necessary for decrypting the encryption applied to the content. The sink can receive the content by receiving the key information and by decrypting the encryption applied to the content by using the key information.

Claims (18)

1. A communication device that transmits encrypted content, the communication device comprising:

circuitry configured to transmit a random value to another communication device, to receive information that is generated by the another communication device based on the random value and on a secret key stored in the another communication device, and to judge whether the received information is mismatched with information held in the communication device,

wherein authentication of the another communication device is considered to have failed if the received information is mismatched with the information held in the communication device,

wherein the circuitry transmits the random value as part of an initiation message transmitted to the another communication device,

wherein the circuitry judges whether the received information is mismatched with the information held in the communication device which is generated using the random value,

wherein in response to the circuitry judging that the received information matches the information held in the communication device, the circuitry transmits key information to the another communication device,

wherein the circuitry updates a count of other communication devices that receive the key information based on whether the another communication device is currently registered in a registration list,

wherein the response to the circuitry determining that the another communication device is not registered in the registration list, the circuitry updates the count by adding an additional value to the count,

wherein the response to the count being equal to the predefined ,maximum value and the another communication device not being already registered in the registration list, an authentication is considered to have failed, and

wherein the circuitry deletes all other communication devices registered in the registration list and resets to zero the count of other communication devices that receive the key information in response to the key information being changed.

2. The communication device according to claim 1 , wherein the key information permits the another communication device to decrypt encrypted content transmitted by the communication device.

3. The communication device according to claim 1 , further comprising a communication interface (I/F), wherein the circuitry transmits the random value to the another communication device via the communication interface, and receives the information generated by the another communication device via the communication interface.

4. The communication device according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a tuner configured to receive content.

5. The communication device according to claim 4 , wherein the circuitry is further configured to encrypt the received content using the key information and to transmit the encrypted content to the another communication device if the received information matches the information held in the communication device.

6. The communication device according to claim 5 , further comprising:

a content player configured to play back content recorded on a recording medium.

7. The communication device according to claim 6 ,wherein the circuitry is further configured to encrypt the played back content using the key information and to transmit the encrypted content to the another communication device if the received information matches the information held in the communication device.
