Abstract

A method of selecting and presenting content based on learned user preferences is provided. The method includes receiving search input from the user for identifying desired content items and receiving content selection actions from the user. The method further includes analyzing the date, day, and time of content selection actions by the user and analyzing descriptive terms associated with the selected content items to learn a periodicity of user selections of similar content items. In response to subsequent searches by the user, the method calls for selecting and ordering a collection of content items for presentation to the user based on comparing the user's search input to descriptive terms associated with content items and based on the learned periodicities of the user.

Claims (41)

1 . A user-interface method of selecting and presenting at least one content item of a collection of content items, the method comprising:

providing access to a collection of content items, each content item having at least one associated descriptive term to describe the content item;

receiving information indicative of user content preferences, wherein the information indicative of user content preferences includes at least one of the following:

historical user interactions with content items from outside of the collection of content items and descriptive terms associated with the content items outside of the collection of content items with which the user interacted, and

learned user content preferences determined by analyzing historical user interactions with content items from outside of the collection of content items and descriptive terms associated with the content items outside of the collection of content items with which the user interacted;

determining a portion of the information indicative of the user content preferences that are relevant to the content items of the collection of content items; and

subsequent to determining the relevant portion of the information indicative of the user content preferences, selecting and presenting at least one content item of the collection of content items based on the relevant portion of the information indicative of the user content preferences.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a set of user content preferences based on the historical user interactions with the content items outside of the collection of content items and on the descriptive terms associated therewith when the information indicative of user content preferences includes historical user interactions with the content items from outside of the collection of content items and descriptive terms associated therewith; and

wherein the relevant portion of the information indicative of the user content preferences on which the selection and presentation of the at least one content item includes a subset of the determined user content preferences.

3 . The method of claim 1 , the selecting and presenting the at least one content item of the collection of content items subsequent to determining the relevant portion of information indicative of the user content preferences being in response to receiving subsequent input entered by the user for identifying desired content items of the collection.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the subsequent input entered by the user is the first interaction between the user and the collection of content items in a series of interactions.

5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the subsequent input includes incremental input that comprises at least one prefix of a word for describing the desired content items of the collection.

6 . The method of claim 1 , the learned content preferences of the user being based on analyzing descriptive terms of content items outside of the collection of content items with which the user interacted from a plurality of content systems.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the content items of the collection of content items are associated with one or more applications on a mobile device.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the content items of the collection and the content items outside of the collection are associated with at least one of an application store application, a calendar application, an e-book reader application, an Internet web browser application, a media player application, a music application, a phone application, a schedule application, a search application, a sports application, a television application, a travel application, and a video application.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the selecting and presenting the at least one content item of the collection is further based on ordering popularity values associated with the content items of the collection, each popularity value indicating a relative measure of a likelihood that the corresponding content item is desired by the user.

10 . The method of claim 1 , the selecting and presenting the at least one content item including presenting the content item on a mobile device display.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the learned user content preferences are stored on a mobile device.

12 . The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the learned user content preferences are stored on a server system remote from the user; and

wherein the receiving information indicative of the user content preferences includes receiving information indicative of the user content preferences from the remote server system.

13 . A user-interface system for selecting and presenting at least on content item of a collection of content items, the user-interface system comprising:

at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium in at least one of a user device or a remote server system in communication with the user device, the computer-readable medium comprising instructions that when executed cause a computer system to:

provide access to a collection of content items, each content item having at least one associated descriptive term to describe the content item;

receive information indicative of user content preferences, wherein the information indicative of user content preferences includes at least one of the following:

historical user interactions with content items from outside of the collection of content items and descriptive terms associated with the content items outside of the collection of content items with which the user interacted, and

learned user content preferences determined by analyzing historical user interactions with content items from outside of the collection of content items and descriptive terms associated with the content items outside of the collection of content items with which the user interacted;

determine a portion of the information indicative of the user content preferences that are relevant to the content items of the collection of content items; and

subsequent to determining the relevant portion of the information indicative of the user content preferences, select and present at least one content item of the collection of content items based on the relevant portion of the information indicative of the user content preferences.

14 . The system of claim 13 , the computer-readable medium further comprising instructions that when executed cause a computer system to:

determine a set of user content preferences based on the historical user interactions with the content items outside of the collection of content items and on the descriptive terms associated therewith when the information indicative of user content preferences includes historical user interactions with the content items from outside of the collection of content items and descriptive terms associated therewith; and

wherein the relevant portion of the information indicative of the user content preferences on which the selection and presentation of the at least one content item includes a subset of the determined user content preferences.

15 . The system of claim 13 , the selecting and presenting the at least one content item of the collection of content items subsequent to determining the relevant portion of information indicative of the user content preferences being in response to receiving subsequent input entered by the user for identifying desired content items of the collection.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the subsequent input entered by the user is the first interaction between the user and the collection of content items in a series of interactions.

17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the subsequent input includes incremental input that comprises at least one prefix of a word for describing the desired content items of the collection.

18 . The system of claim 13 , the learned content preferences of the user being based on analyzing descriptive terms of content items outside of the collection of content items with which the user interacted from a plurality of content systems.

19 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the content items of the collection of content items are associated with one or more applications on a mobile device.

20 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the selecting and presenting the at least one content item is further based on ordering popularity values associated with the content items of the collection, each popularity value indicating a relative measure of a likelihood that the corresponding content item is desired by the user.

21 . The system of claim 13 , the selecting and presenting the at least one content item including presenting the content item on a mobile device display.

22 . The system of claim 13 , the computer-readable medium further comprising instructions that when executed cause a computer system to receive the learned content preferences stored on a mobile device.
