Abstract

Initiating a virtual presence at a physical access point in response to a request for a service from a wireless access device is provided. A particular wireless service may be provided to a subscriber on an on-demand basis according to location and/or type of service requested. The service may be terminated when demand for the service comes to an end whereby a common wireless service infrastructure may be shared amongst service providers thus eliminating the need for radio channel coordination and otherwise enhancing service quality for those service providers.

Claims (39)

1. A method for providing on-demand wireless services, the method comprising:

providing a requested service to a wireless access device via a first virtual wireless base station presence at a first wireless base station;

detecting a degradation in signal quality between the wireless access device and the first wireless base station;

determining that the wireless access device is preparing to roam from a coverage area of the first wireless base station when the degradation in signal quality meets a predetermined threshold;

Identifying a second wireless base station that provides better signal quality than the degraded signal quality from the first wireless base station;

determining whether the wireless access device at the second wireless base station is authenticated, wherein authentication requirements are reduced based on information provided to the second wireless base station from the first wireless base station;

initiating a second virtual wireless base station presence at the second wireless base station to provide the requested service to the wireless access device;

determining whether there are any authenticated wireless access devices in a coverage area of the second wireless base station within a set period of time;

terminating the second virtual wireless base station presence based on the determination that there are no authenticated wireless access devices in the coverage area of the second wireless base station within the set period of time.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information provided to the second wireless base station from the first wireless base station comprises an authentication token.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set period of time is configurable.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set period of time relates to one or more trigger points.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising grouping the wireless base station based on credentials.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising broadcasting a beacon frame indicating availability of the requested service.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein initiating the second virtual wireless base station presence comprises generating or retrieving an SSID associated with a service provider of the requested service.

8. A system for providing on-demand wireless services, the system comprising:

a first wireless base station that:

provides a requested service to a wireless access device via a first virtual wireless base station presence;

detects a degradation in signal quality between the wireless access device and the first wireless base station;

determines that the wireless access device is preparing to roam from a coverage area of the first wireless base station when the degradation in signal quality meets a predetermined threshold; and a second wireless base station that is identified as providing better signal quality than the degraded signal quality from the first wireless base station;

determines whether the wireless access device at the second wireless base station is authenticated, wherein authentication requirements are reduced based on information provided to the second wireless base station from the first wireless base station; and

initiates a second virtual wireless base station presence to provide the requested service to the wireless access device;

wherein the second wireless base station further determines whether there are any authenticated wireless access devices in a coverage area of the second wireless base station within a set period of time;

wherein the second wireless base station terminates the second virtual wireless base station presence based on the determination that there are no authenticated wireless access devices in the coverage area of the second wireless base station within the set period of time.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the information provided to the second wireless base station from the first wireless base station comprises an authentication token.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the set period of time is configurable.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the set period of time relates to one or more trigger points.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second wireless base station further groups the wireless base station based on credentials.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second wireless base station broadcasts a beacon frame indicating availability of the requested service.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second wireless base station initiates the second virtual wireless base station presence by generating or retrieving an SSID associated with a service provider of the requested service.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, having embodied thereon a program executable by a processor to perform a method for providing on-demand wireless services, the method comprising:

providing a requested service to a wireless access device via a first virtual wireless base station presence at a first wireless base station;

detecting a degradation in signal quality between the wireless access device and the first wireless base station;

determining that the wireless access device is preparing to roam from a coverage area of the first wireless base station when the degradation in signal quality meets a predetermined threshold;

identifying a second wireless base station that provides better signal quality than the degraded signal quality from the first wireless base station;

determining whether the wireless access device at the second wireless base station is authenticated, wherein authentication requirements are reduced based on information provided to the second wireless base station from the first wireless base station;

initiating a second virtual wireless base station presence at the second wireless base station to provide the requested service to the wireless access device;

determining whether there are any authenticated wireless access devices in a coverage area of the second wireless base station within a set period of time;

terminating the second virtual wireless base station presence based on the determination that there are no authenticated wireless access devices in the coverage area of the second wireless base station within the set period of time.
