Abstract

An implant system includes a fixation device that, in turn can include an expandable implant alone or in combination with an auxiliary implant. The expandable implant includes an expandable implant body that is made from an expandable material. The expandable material includes a polymer matrix and an expandable gas source contained within at least a portion of the polymer matrix. The implant system can further include an energy source configured to heat the polymer matrix to a temperature above its glass transition temperature, thereby causing the gas source to expand inside the polymer matrix. The fixation device can further include an insertion instrument configured to implant the fixation device into an anatomical cavity.

Claims (19)

1. A method of filling an anatomical cavity comprising:

inserting an expandable implant into an anatomical cavity, the implant including a polymer matrix and an expandable gas source encapsulated within at least a portion of the polymer matrix, the implant defining a first volume at a first temperature below the glass transition temperature of the polymer matrix; and

transmitting energy from an energy source to the expandable implant, wherein the polymer matrix is heated from the first temperature to a second temperature above its glass transition temperature so as to soften the polymer matrix; and,

expanding the expandable gas source to expand the expandable implant to a second expanded volume greater than the first volume.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the heating step is performed after the expandable implant is inserted into the anatomical cavity.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the heating step is performed before the expandable implant is inserted into the anatomical cavity.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant is configured to adapt to the contour of the anatomical cavity after the heating step.

5. The method according to claims 1 , further comprising the step of coating the expandable implant onto at least a portion of an outer surface of an insertion instrument.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant includes concentrated regions of the expandable gas source such that expanding the expandable gas source to expand the expandable implant to a second expanded volume occurs only at the concentrated regions.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant includes a dyed region such that transmitting energy from an energy source to the polymer matrix so as to heat the polymer matrix occurs only at the dyed region.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant is in the form of a fixation device.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the fixation device is in the form of an intramedullary nail.

10. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising fixing an auxiliary implant to or within a bone with the fixation device.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the auxiliary implant defines an auxiliary implant body configured as a bone anchor.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the expandable implant is coated onto or affixed to an outer surface of the auxiliary implant body.

13. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the expandable implant is disposed within a passage of the auxiliary implant body.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the auxiliary implant body is configured as a bone screw.

15. The method according to claim 12 , wherein the auxiliary implant body is configured as a Kirschner wire.

16. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the auxiliary implant is a bone plate.
