Abstract

A pumping system includes a pump array of multiple pump-engine assemblies. Each pump-engine assembly comprises a pump and a gas turbine engine driving the pump. A manifold is coupled to the pumps. A master controller is coupled to each of the pump-engine assemblies either directly or via one or more intermediate controllers. The master controller and any intermediate controllers are collectively programmed to respond to user input including a desired hydraulic output at the manifold by automatically calculating and applying inputs to the individual pump-engine assemblies to provide the desired hydraulic output.

Claims (35)

1. A pumping assembly, comprising:

multiple pump-engine assemblies, each pump-engine assembly comprising a pump and a corresponding gas turbine engine driving the pump;

a manifold coupled to each of the pumps;

sensors comprising (1) engine sensors to measure attributes of each of the gas turbine engines including at least input, operating conditions, and output, (2) pump sensors to measure hydraulic conditions related to each pump including at least hydraulic output, and (3) at least one hydraulic output sensor to measure hydraulic output related to hydraulic output at the manifold;

multiple engine controllers, each engine controller coupled to a different gas turbine engine and the engine sensors corresponding to said engine;

for each pump-engine assembly, a pump-engine controller coupled to the engine controller of the pump-engine assembly and also coupled to the pump sensors of the pump-engine assembly;

a master controller coupled to each of the pump-engine controllers and the hydraulic output sensor, the master controller programmed to perform operations comprising:

receiving input including a user-specified output;

according to a predefined strategy, calculating target hydraulic outputs for each of the pump-engine assemblies such that that the pump-engine assemblies would collectively produce the user-specified output at the hydraulic output sensor;

individually sending commands to each pump-engine engine controller to produce the corresponding target hydraulic output;

each pump-engine controller programmed to perform operations comprising:

responsive to the master controller's command to produce the target hydraulic output, calculating a target engine output such that the coupled pump-engine assembly would produce the target hydraulic output;

sending commands to the coupled engine controller to produce the target engine output; and

each engine controller programmed to respond to the coupled pump-engine controller's commands to produce the target engine output by calculating and applying combustion inputs to the coupled engine sufficient to cause the engine to produce the target engine output.

2. A pumping system, comprising:

multiple pumps coupled to a manifold, each pump driven by a different gas turbine engine; and

at least one controller coupled to the engines, the controller programmed to employ a predetermined strategy to calculate and individually adjust target mechanical outputs of the engines such that pumps collectively produce a user-specified hydraulic output at a prescribed site in fluid communication with the manifold,

where the predetermined strategy includes avoiding backflow through any of the pumps comprising ensuring that all pumps whose maximum hydraulic output is less than the user-specified hydraulic output are turned off or disconnected from the manifold.

3. The system of claim 2 , the prescribed site comprising one or more of the following: the manifold, a site upstream or downstream of the manifold, a site whose hydraulic output is proportional to hydraulic output at the manifold.

4. The system of claim 2 , where the controller is further coupled to plumbing hardware to selectively control connection between the manifold and each of the pumps individually.

5. The system of claim 2 , where the predetermined strategy includes avoiding operation of any one or more given gas turbine engines at a prescribed percentage of the gas turbine engine's maximum power.

6. The system of claim 2 , where the controller is programmed to respond to the user-specified hydraulic output, said user-specified hydraulic output being free from details of engine and pump configuration and operation, and where said response includes automatically managing the individual gas turbine engines such that the pumps collectively produce the user-specified hydraulic output.

7. The system of claim 2 , where the controller is programmed such that the operation of calculating and individually adjusting target mechanical outputs of the engines comprises the following for each given gas turbine engine:

measuring mechanical outputs of the given gas turbine engine including temperature, speed, and torque; and

selecting and applying combustion inputs including air, fuel, and ignition specific to make and model of the given gas turbine engine.

8. The system of claim 2 , where the controller is programmed such that the user-specified hydraulic output comprises at least one of: pressure, flow rate.

9. The system of claim 2 , where the controller is programmed such that the predetermined strategy comprises applying measured mechanical output of a given engine and measured hydraulic output of a pump driven by the given engine as operational parameters in at least one proportional-integral-differential control loop.

10. A pumping system, comprising:

multiple pumps coupled to a manifold, each pump driven by a different gas turbine engine; and

at least one controller coupled to the engines, the controller programmed to employ a predetermined strategy to calculate and individually adjust target mechanical outputs of the engines such that pumps collectively produce a user-specified hydraulic output at a prescribed site in fluid communication with the manifold, where the predetermined strategy includes avoiding backflow through the pump-engine assemblies comprising ensuring that all pumps whose minimum hydraulic output exceeds the user-specified hydraulic output are turned off or disconnected from the manifold.

11. A method of operating a pumping system, comprising operations of:

providing multiple pumps coupled to a manifold, each pump driven by a gas turbine engine;

providing at least one controller coupled to the engines; and

the controller employing a predetermined strategy to calculate and individually adjust target outputs of the engines such that the pumps collectively produce a user-specified hydraulic output at a prescribed site in fluid communication with the manifold, where the prescribed strategy includes avoiding backflow through the pumps by ensuring that all pumps whose maximum hydraulic output is less than the user-specified hydraulic output are turned off or disconnected from the manifold.

12. The method of claim 11 , where the prescribed strategy further includes avoiding excessive hydraulic output in the manifold by ensuring that all pumps whose minimum hydraulic output exceeds the user-specified hydraulic output are turned off or disconnected from the manifold.
