Abstract

Described are surgical implants that include a central support portion adapted to be positioned to support pelvic tissue, between mesh end portions adapted to be passed through body tissue, wherein edges of the end portions exhibit extensions that are resistant to deformation.

Claims (20)

1. A surgical implant comprising an open pore elongate strip comprising

a central support portion, a first end portion extending from the central support portion, and a second end portion extending from the central support portion, the central support portion having a width greater than a width of the first and second end portions, wherein the first end portion and the second end portion each comprise an edge comprising edge extensions, and wherein the first end portion and the second end portion each comprise mesh having opposed mesh edges and are formed of strands arranged to define mesh pores, with strand ends extending outwardly of the opposed mesh edges as the edge extensions, and

reinforcement adjacent to each edge and not including each edge, the reinforcement comprising melted strands of mesh adjacent to un-melted edge extensions, and the reinforcement causing an increase in force required to pull the end portions through tissue.

2. The implant of claim 1 , wherein

each edge includes edge extensions of a severed open pore material, and

the reinforcement adjacent to the edge extensions does not contact ends of the edge extensions.

3. The implant of claim 1 , wherein

the reinforcement adjacent to the edge extensions does not contact the end portions.

4. The implant of claim 3 , wherein

each end portion comprises two substantially parallel edges, and

the reinforcement comprises a length-wise strip located along each edge at least 0.1 centimeter from the severed ends.

5. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first end portion and the second end portion each comprise a connector at an end opposite of the central support portion.

6. The implant of claim 1 further comprising a removable sheath disposed about the first end portion and second end portion.

7. A method of preparing an implant, the method comprising:

providing an open pore elongate strip comprising a central support portion and at least one end portion extending from the central support portion, the central support portion having a width greater than a width of the at least one end portion, and edges extending from the at least one end portion and wherein a first end portion comprises mesh having opposed mesh edges and is formed of strands arranged to define mesh pores, with strand ends extending outwardly of the opposed mesh edges as an edge extension,

reinforcing the strip adjacent to a first edge of the edges but not in contact with the first edge, the reinforcement comprising melted strands of mesh adjacent to un-melted edge extensions, and to provide reinforcement adjacent to the first edge to increase the force required to pull the strip through tissue.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein

the reinforcement adjacent to the edge extensions does not contact ends of the edge extensions, the reinforcement causing the edge extensions to be stiffened and thereby increasing the force required to pull the strip through tissue.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein

the method comprises thermally treating mesh adjacent the edge extensions without melting the edge extensions.
