Abstract

A bone anchoring device including a clamping device and a flexible band configured to be secured a vertebra. The clamping device includes a base member and an upper member configured to be secured together with a fastener. The flexible band is configured to be passed around a bone portion and through a passage of the base member to position the flexible band between a clamping surface of the base member and a clamping surface of the upper member. The flexible band is tensioned to urge the clamping device against the bone portion and then clamped between the clamping surfaces of the base member and the upper member. A stabilization member of a vertebral stabilization construct may be secured to the vertebra with the bone anchoring device without invasively altering or impairing the structural integrity of the vertebra.

Claims (24)

1. A bone anchoring device comprising:

a clamping device including:

a passage extending therethrough;

a channel extending therethrough, for receiving a stabilization member of a vertebral stabilization construct;

a bone engagement surface configured to engage a surface of a bone member when secured thereto, the bone engagement surface including engagement features to enhance frictional engagement between the bone engagement surface and the surface of the bone member; and

a flexible band extendable through the passage of the clamping device and configured to be passed around the bone member to secure the clamping device to the bone member with the bone engagement surface pressed against the surface of the bone member.

2. The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the bone engaging surface is configured to press into a bone member when the flexible band is tightened around the bone member.

3. The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the engagement features include surface roughening features configured for gripping the bone member.

4. The bone anchoring device of claim 3 , wherein the engagement features include one or more teeth configured to engage the bone member.

5. The bone anchoring device of claim 3 , wherein the engagement features include a layer of a porous metal defining a plurality of pores.

6. The bone anchoring device of claim 3 , wherein the engagement features include one or more grooves.

7. The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the clamping device includes a base member and an upper member configured to be secured together with a fastener.

8. The bone anchoring device of claim 7 , wherein the base member includes the bone engagement surface.

9. The bone anchoring device of claim 7 , wherein the base member includes the passage for receiving the flexible band therethrough.

10. The bone anchoring device of claim 7 , wherein the upper member includes the channel.

11. The bone anchoring device of claim 7 , wherein the flexible band is positionable between a clamping surface of the base member and a clamping surface of the upper member.

12. The bone anchoring device of claim 11 , wherein the clamping device includes a first fastener for clamping the flexible band between the clamping surface of the base member and the clamping surface of the upper member.

13. The bone anchoring device of claim 12 , wherein the clamping device includes a second fastener for clamping a stabilization member in the channel.

14. The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the clamping device includes a first fastener for clamping the flexible band in the passage.

15. The bone anchoring device of claim 14 , wherein the flexible band is clamped in the passage independent of clamping a stabilization member in the channel.

16. The bone anchoring device of claim 14 , wherein the clamping device includes a second fastener for clamping a stabilization member in the channel.

17. The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the passage includes a first opening on a first side of the clamping device and a second opening on a second side of the clamping device, opposite the first side, a first end portion of the flexible band extendable through the first opening and a second end portion of the flexible band extendable through the second opening, with a loop portion of the flexible band extendable around the bone member.

18. The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the bone engagement surface is a concave surface.

19. The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the channel is offset from the passage.
