Abstract

Suture anchors for securing therapy delivery elements, such as stimulation leads or catheters, within a living body. The suture anchor includes an inner sleeve constructed with an inner layer of a softer, more pliable material that easily conforms to the therapy delivery element to reduce slippage and an outer layer constructed from a harder, stiffer durometer material that protects the therapy delivery elements from damage due to over-tightening the tie down sutures. A suture material located in the suture groove is tensioned to apply a radial compressive force. The reinforcing structure spreads the radial compressive force along a greater surface area of the therapy delivery element.

Claims (38)

1. A suture anchor for securing a therapy delivery element to a desired location within a living body, the suture anchor comprising:

a deformable anchor body comprising a primary lumen sized to receive the therapy delivery element and at least one exterior suture groove adapted to receive a suture material;

an inner sleeve located in the primary lumen, the inner sleeve comprising an inner sleeve lumen aligned with the primary lumen, the inner sleeve comprising an inner layer of a compliant material having a first durometer, and an outer layer radially outside the inner layer, the outer layer having a second durometer greater than the first durometer; and

a reinforcing structure integrated with the inner sleeve, wherein:

the first durometer of the inner layer provides a slip-resistant surface for gripping the therapy delivery element; and

the second durometer of the outer layer and the reinforcing structure provide a protective layer to inhibit damage to the therapy delivery element from over-tightening of the suture material.

2. The suture anchor of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing structure is located between the inner layer and the outer layer.

3. The suture anchor of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing structure includes at least one of a coil, a braid, or a woven component.

4. The suture anchor of claim 1 , comprising the suture material, wherein, with the suture material located in the suture groove, the suture material is configured to be tensioned to apply a radial compressive force that engages the inner layer of the inner sleeve with the therapy delivery element.

5. The suture anchor of claim 1 , comprising the suture material, wherein, with the suture material located in the suture groove, the suture material is configured to be tensioned to apply a radial compressive force, the reinforcing structure spreading the radial compressive force along a greater surface area of the therapy delivery element.

6. The suture anchor of claim 1 , comprising the suture material, wherein the suture material is configured in a self-locking compression knot located in the suture groove, the suture material comprising distal ends adapted to receive a tension force that is transmitted as a radial compressive force to deform the inner sleeve and engage the inner layer with the therapy delivery element.

7. A suture anchor configured to secure a therapy delivery element with respect to a living body, the suture anchor comprising:

a deformable anchor body including:

a primary lumen sized to receive the therapy delivery element; and

at least one suture groove adapted to receive a suture material;

an inner sleeve disposed within the primary lumen, the inner sleeve including an inner sleeve lumen substantially aligned with the primary lumen, the inner sleeve including an inner layer including a first material of a first durometer, and an outer layer radially outside the inner layer, the outer layer including a second material of a second durometer greater than the first durometer; and

a reinforcing structure disposed around the inner layer of the inner sleeve, wherein:

the first material of the inner layer provides a slip-resistant surface for gripping the therapy delivery element; and

the second material of the outer layer and the reinforcing structure provide a protective layer to inhibit damage to the therapy delivery element from over-tightening of the suture material.

8. The suture anchor of claim 7 , wherein the reinforcing structure is integrated with the inner sleeve.

9. The suture anchor of claim 8 , wherein the inner sleeve is overmolded onto the reinforcing structure.

10. The suture anchor of claim 7 , wherein the at least one suture groove is disposed in an outer surface of the deformable anchor body, the at least one exterior suture groove canted at a non-perpendicular angle to a longitudinal axis of the primary lumen.

11. The suture anchor of claim 7 , comprising the suture material, wherein the suture material, when tensioned, is configured to apply the radial compressive force to engage the inner layer of the inner sleeve with the therapy delivery element.

12. The suture anchor of claim 7 , wherein the reinforcing structure is disposed between the inner layer and the outer layer of the inner sleeve.

13. The suture anchor of claim 7 , comprising the suture material, wherein the suture material is infused with a medical adhesive.

14. The suture anchor of claim 7 , wherein the first durometer includes a Shore hardness of 20 to 35 and the second durometer includes a Shore hardness of 60 to 80.

15. A suture anchor assembly for securing a therapy delivery element to a desired location within a living body, the suture anchor assembly comprising:

a deformable anchor body comprising a primary lumen sized to receive the therapy delivery element;

an inner sleeve located in the primary lumen, the inner sleeve comprising an inner sleeve lumen aligned with the primary lumen, the inner sleeve comprising an inner layer of a compliant material having a first durometer, and an outer layer radially outside the inner layer, the outer layer having a second durometer greater than the first durometer;

a reinforcing structure disposed within the primary lumen, the reinforcing structure including a braid; and

a suture material located in a suture groove on an outer surface of the anchor body, the suture material being adapted to apply a radial compressive force that engages the inner layer of the inner sleeve with the therapy delivery element, wherein:

the first durometer of the inner layer provides a slip-resistant surface for gripping the therapy delivery element; and

the second durometer of the outer layer and the reinforcing structure provide a protective layer to inhibit damage to the therapy delivery element from over-tightening of the suture material.

16. The suture anchor assembly of claim 15 , wherein the reinforcing structure is integrally formed with the inner sleeve.

17. The suture anchor assembly of claim 16 , wherein the inner sleeve is overmolded onto the reinforcing structure.

18. The suture anchor assembly of claim 15 , wherein the reinforcing structure is disposed between the inner layer and the outer layer of the inner sleeve.

19. The suture anchor assembly of claim 15 , wherein, with the suture material located in the suture groove, the reinforcing structure is configured to spread the radial compressive force along a greater surface area of the therapy delivery element.

20. The suture anchor assembly of claim 15 , wherein the suture groove is canted at a non-perpendicular angle to a longitudinal axis of the primary lumen.
