Abstract

A total artificial heart having a rotor with an impeller, wherein the rotor is mounted within a pump housing on a hollow shaft. The rotor is magnetically driven to produce rotary motion of the impeller for pumping blood. The motor is disposed within the pump housing such that axial translation within the housing acts as a shuttle valve to alternate flow between pulmonary and systemic circulation.

Claims (18)

1. A method for pumping blood in a patient comprising:

providing a pump comprising a housing having an impeller rotatably and translatably housed within a bore of the housing;

wherein the pump is configured to rotate the impeller in a first axial position to pump venous blood from venous circulation to a pulmonary circulation and to rotate the impeller in a second axial position to pump blood from a left atrium to arterial circulation.

2. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the impeller is rotated in the first axial position to pump the blood from (a) a right atrium or vasculature leading to the right atrium to (b) a pulmonary artery while blocking flow from a left atrium to arterial circulation.

3. A method as in claim 2 , wherein the impeller is rotated in the second axial position to pump the blood from (c) the left atrium to the aorta while blocking flow from the venous circulation to the pulmonary circulation.

4. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the pump is fully implanted in the patient.

5. A method as in claim 1 , wherein rotating comprises imparting magnetic forces from the pump housing to drive rotation of the rotor.

6. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the rotor is configured to translate along the central axis of the bore from the first position to the second position.

A method as in claim 1 , wherein in the first position, the rotor is configured to draw a first volume of blood from the right atrium through a first vascular connector and pump the first volume of blood through a second vascular connector to the pulmonary artery while blocking flow to and from a third and a fourth vascular connectors and wherein in the second position, the rotor is configured to draw a second volume of blood from the left atrium through the third vascular connector and pump the second volume of blood into aorta through the fourth vascular connector while blocking flow to and from the first and second vascular connectors.

8. A method for pumping blood in a patient comprising:

implanting a pump comprising a housing having first, second, third and fourth vascular connectors, and an impeller rotatably and translatably mounted housed within a bore of the housing; and

connecting the first vascular connector to a left atrium (LA), the second vascular connector to an aorta (AO), the third vascular connector to a right atrium (RA), and the fourth vascular connector to a pulmonary artery (PA);

wherein the pump is configured to rotate the impeller in a first axial position to pump venous blood from the right atrium to the pulmonary artery and to rotate the impeller in a second axial position to pump blood from the left atrium to the aorta.

9. A method as in claim 8 , wherein blood flow from the left atrium to the aorta is blocked when the rotor is in the first axial position.

10. A method as in claim 9 , wherein blood flow from the right atrium to the pulmonary artery is blocked when the rotor is in the second axial position.

11. A method as in claim 8 , wherein the pump is fully implanted in the patient.

12. A method as in claim 8 , wherein rotating comprises imparting magnetic forces from the pump to drive rotation of the rotor.

13. A method as in claim 8 , wherein the rotor is configured to translate along the central axis of the bore from the first position to the second position.
