Abstract

The present disclosure provides techniques and methods of tripping rods and tubulars. Specifically, the disclosure provides techniques for pulling a rod string out of hole and delivering the pulled out rod segments into a rod storage and racking system. The disclosure also provides techniques for pulling a tubular string out of hole and delivering the pulled out tubular segments into a tubular storage and racking system. The disclosure further provides techniques for delivering rods from the rod storage and racking system and running the rods down-hole. The disclosure also provides techniques for delivering tubulars from the tubular storage and racking system and running the tubulars down-hole.

Claims (39)

1. A method of pulling a rod out of a well hole, comprising:

lifting a rod string through a disengaged rod clamp and rod positioner assembly with a traveling block system and remotely controlled rod elevator until a junction between a first rod of the rod string and a second rod of the rod string is above the rod positioner;

engaging the rod positioner onto the second rod, wherein the rod positioner holds the second rod in a stationary position;

suspending the rod string in the rod positioner;

engaging a tong assembly onto the first rod, wherein the tong assembly twists the first rod and unthreads the first rod from the second rod;

disengaging the tong assembly from the first rod;

raising the first rod above the tong assembly and moving the first rod towards a carriage, wherein the carriage is raised and extended at an angle;

lowering the first rod onto the carriage and releasing the first rod from the rod elevator;

lowering and retracting the carriage into a horizontal position; and

tilting the carriage and discharging the rod from the carriage onto a rod racking system.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

engaging the rod clamp onto the second rod;

disengaging and lower the rod positioner assembly from the second rod;

engaging the rod elevator onto the second rod;

disengaging the rod clamp from the second rod; and

lifting the second rod until the second rod is above the raised rod positioner.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the travelling block is attached to a vertical guide, the vertical traveling guide substantially parallel with the rod string and suspended from a mast.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

pushing a first end of the first rod onto a skate of the carriage; and

sliding the skate down at least a portion of a length of the carriage.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the first rod from the carriage onto a rotating indexer of the rod racking system;

rotating the indexer and transporting the first rod from a first side of the indexer to a second side of the indexer, the second side opposite the first side;

discharging the first rod onto a plurality of ramps; and

receiving the first rod onto a plurality of base beams.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein engaging the rod positioner assembly onto the second rod further comprises:

closing a rod flat clamp and engaging one or more flats of the second rod; and

closing a rod coupler clamp and engaging a coupler of the second rod.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein unthreading the first rod from the second rod comprises unthreading the first rod from a coupler of the second rod.

8. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

engaging the rod clamp onto the second rod and supporting the rod string.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein disengaging the rod positioner assembly from the second rod further includes:

opening a rod coupling clamp of the rod positioner assembly;

opening a rod flat clamp of the rod positioner assembly;

opening a rod positioner of the rod positioner assembly; and

lowering the rod positioner assembly.

10. The method of claim 2 , wherein moving and engaging the rod elevator onto the second rod is performed with a remotely controlled link tilt system of the traveling block system.

11. The method of claim 2 , wherein engaging, disengaging, lowering and raising the rod positioner assembly, disengaging the rod positioner assembly, engaging and rotating the tong assembly, disengaging the tong assembly, engaging the rod clamp, disengaging the rod clamp, engaging the rod elevator, releasing the first rod from the rod elevator, or any combination thereof is performed in response to a command signal received from a remote or local controller.

12. The method of claim 2 , wherein engaging, disengaging, lowering and raising the rod positioner assembly, disengaging the rod positioner assembly, engaging and rotating the tong assembly, disengaging the tong assembly, engaging the rod clamp, disengaging the rod clamp, engaging the rod elevator, releasing the first rod from the rod elevator, or any combination thereof is performed in response to a command from a controller in accordance with a preprogrammed set of instructions written on a non-transitory medium.
