Abstract

A method and system to select an operating mode of a mobile device, the method including: detecting a request for a call; determining by a processor of the mobile device a data usage limit; determining by a processor of the mobile device a cumulative amount of data sent using the data connection during a current billing period; determining, by a processor of the mobile device, an availability of a data connection; and setting a communication mode of the mobile device depending upon the availability of a data connection and a comparison of the cumulative amount of data sent to the data usage limit.

Claims (41)

1. A method to select an operating mode of a mobile device, the method comprising:

detecting a request for a call;

determining by a processor of the mobile device a data usage limit;

determining by a processor of the mobile device a cumulative amount of data sent using the data connection during a current billing period;

determining, by a processor of the mobile device, an availability of a data connection;

setting a communication mode of the mobile device depending upon the availability of the data connection and a comparison of the cumulative amount of data sent to the data usage limit;

establishing a first call leg between the mobile device and a system controller, wherein the first call leg is by use of the set communication mode;

establishing a second call leg between the system controller and a far-end terminal; and

joining, by the system controller, the first call leg and the second call leg to produce the call.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

during an ongoing call, determining by the processor of the mobile device a cumulative amount of data sent using the data connection during the current billing period;

determining, by a processor of the mobile device, an availability of the data connection; and

changing the communication mode of the ongoing call depending upon the availability of the data connection and a present comparison of the cumulative amount of data sent to the data usage limit.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein setting the communication mode further comprises setting the communication mode to VoIP mode if the cumulative amount of data sent is less than the data usage limit.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein setting the communication mode further comprises setting the communication mode to callback mode if the cumulative amount of data sent is greater than the data usage limit.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data usage limit comprises a fixed limit per billing period.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data usage limit comprises a time-dependent limit.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data usage limit comprises a sliding time-dependent limit.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data usage limit comprises a limit that is specific to an identification of the data connection.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data usage limit comprises a limit that is specific to a billing cycle of the data connection.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a warning if the cumulative amount of data sent is within a predetermined threshold from the data usage limit.

11. A system to select an operating mode of a mobile device, the system comprising:

an interface configured to detect a request for a call;

a processor of the mobile device configured:

to detect a data usage limit;

to determine a cumulative amount of data sent using the data connection during a current billing period;

to determine an availability of a data connection;

to set a communication mode of the mobile device depending upon the availability of the data connection and a comparison of the cumulative amount of data sent to the data usage limit;

establishing a first call leg between the mobile device and a system controller, wherein the first call leg is by use of the set communication mode;

establishing a second call leg between the system controller and a far-end terminal; and

joining, by the system controller, the first call leg and the second call leg to produce the call.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising:

during an ongoing call, determining by the processor of the mobile device a cumulative amount of data sent using the data connection during the current billing period;

determining, by a processor of the mobile device, an availability of the data connection; and

changing the communication mode of the ongoing call depending upon the availability of the data connection and a present comparison of the cumulative amount of data sent to the data usage limit.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein setting the communication mode further comprises setting the communication mode to VoIP mode if the cumulative amount of data sent is less than the data usage limit.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein setting the communication mode further comprises setting the communication mode to callback mode if the cumulative amount of data sent is greater than the data usage limit.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the data usage limit comprises a fixed limit per billing period.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the data usage limit comprises a time-dependent limit.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the data usage limit comprises a sliding time-dependent limit.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the data usage limit comprises a limit that is specific to an identification of the data connection.
