Abstract

Methods for supporting a prosthetic implant in a patient are disclosed. In some embodiments, a hollow sleeve and a prosthetic implant with a stem component are implanted in a cavity in an end of a bone where the hollow sleeve provides an axial channel that extends through the length of the hollow sleeve for receiving the stem component. In some embodiments, the hollow sleeve is capable of being impacted into the cavity for obtaining a press fit of the hollow sleeve in the cavity. In some embodiments, the hollow sleeve is formed with a porous material.

Claims (15)

1. A method for supporting a prosthetic implant and restoring lost bone stock in a cavity in an end of a bone of a patient, the method comprising:

implanting a first curved support member, a second curved support member, and a prosthetic implant with a stem component in a cavity in an end of a bone of a patient with the first curved support member and the second curved support member being arranged together to create a prosthetic implant support structure with an axial channel that extends through the length of the support structure and through which the stem component of the prosthetic implant is received for supporting the prosthetic implant in the cavity in the end of the bone, wherein the first curved support member and the second curved support member each are formed with a porous metal material that is a bone ingrowth-receptive material with a porous structure for encouraging bone ingrowth and attachment throughout the first curved support member and the second curved support member for restoring lost bone stock in the patient.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the prosthetic implant is a tibia implant or a femoral implant.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first curved support member and said second curved support member are formed with a porous metal alloy.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said implanting includes impacting the first curved support member and the second curved support member into the cavity.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first curved support member and the second curved support member are positioned in the cavity and thereafter the stem component is moved into the axial channel.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising securing the stem component to an interior surface of the axial channel with an adhesive.

7. The method of claim 1 performed as part of a revision surgery, wherein the prosthetic implant is a replacement prosthetic implant.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first curved support member and the second curved support member each have an established size and shape prior to being implanted in the cavity in the end of the bone.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first curved support member and the second curved support member each have an external geometry that is implantable in the cavity in the end of the bone, and wherein each of the first curved support member and the second curved support member, despite being formed with said porous metal material, is capable of being impacted, by itself, into the cavity in the end of the bone for obtaining a press fit of the respective external geometry in the cavity in the end of the bone.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first curved support member and the second curved support member each include at least one screw hole for securing the first curved support member and the second curved support member to an inner surface of the cavity in the end of the bone.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein said implanting includes driving a first screw and a second screw into the inner surface of the cavity in the end of the bone through a first screw hole in the first curved support member and a second screw hole in the second curved support member, respectively.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first curved support member and the second curved support member each have an established size and shape prior to being implanted in the cavity in the end of the bone.

13. A method for supporting a prosthetic implant and restoring lost bone stock in a cavity in an end of a bone of a patient, the method comprising:

implanting a first curved support member, a second curved support member, and a prosthetic implant with a stem component in a cavity in an end of a bone of a patient with the first curved support member and the second curved support member being arranged together to create a prosthetic implant support structure with an axial channel that extends through the length of the support structure and through which the stem component of the prosthetic implant is received for supporting the prosthetic implant in the cavity in the end of the bone, wherein the first curved support member and the second curved support member each are formed with a porous metal material that is a bone ingrowth-receptive material with a porous structure for encouraging bone ingrowth and attachment throughout the first curved support member and the second curved support member for restoring lost bone stock in the patient, and wherein said implanting includes driving a first screw and a second screw into an inner surface of the cavity in the end of the bone through a first screw hole in the first curved support member and a second screw hole in the second curved support member, respectively.
