Abstract

A method of choosing a nametag using automatic speech recognition (ASR) includes: receiving a spoken nametag via a microphone; performing a first speech recognition analysis on the spoken nametag; determining that the first speech recognition analysis outputs only handheld wireless device nametags; performing a second speech recognition analysis that excludes the handheld wireless device nametags stored at the handheld wireless device; and combining the results of the first speech recognition analysis and the second speech recognition analysis.

Claims (14)

1. A method of choosing a nametag using automatic speech recognition (ASR), comprising the steps of:

(a) receiving a spoken nametag via a microphone;

(b) performing a first speech recognition analysis on the spoken nametag;

(c) determining that the first speech recognition analysis outputs only handheld wireless device nametags;

(d) performing a second speech recognition analysis that excludes the handheld wireless device nametags stored at a handheld wireless device in response to the determination in step (c); and

(e) combining the results of the first speech recognition analysis and the second speech recognition analysis.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of performing the second speech recognition analysis comprises doing so on vehicle telematics nametags.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of determining whether any vehicle telematics nametags are stored at a vehicle before performing the second speech recognition analysis.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the spoken nametag includes a vehicle telematics nametag.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of performing the first speech recognition analysis comprises searching for a vehicle telematics nametag in a memory device located in a vehicle telematics unit and a handheld wireless device nametag in a phonebook at a handheld wireless device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of initiating an ASR system with a button push before receiving the spoken nametag via the microphone.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the handheld wireless device nametags are accessed using a Bluetooth phonebook access profile (PBAP).

8. A system for choosing a nametag using automatic speech recognition (ASR), comprising:

a vehicle telematics unit that includes a processor, a computer-readable memory device storing data and speech recognition software, and a short-range wireless antenna that are each installed on a vehicle, wherein the vehicle telematics unit establishes a wireless link with a handheld wireless device using the short-range wireless antenna, accesses one or more handheld wireless device nametags stored at the handheld wireless device via the wireless link, searches the computer-readable memory for vehicle telematics nametags, and if found, performs speech recognition on the content of the vehicle telematics nametag entries found in the computer-readable memory while excluding the content of the handheld wireless device nametags accessed through the wireless link.
