Abstract

A mechanical hub is provided. The mechanical hub is attachable to a cable and includes an outer shell and tiles. The outer shell surrounds the cable. The tiles are spaced to surround the circumference of the cable. The tiles may be positioned between the outer shell and the cable such that a translation of the outer shell alters the distance between the tiles and the cable. The mechanical hub may improve signals that are transmitted over segments of a cable that have degraded signal quality.

Claims (26)

1. A mechanical hub attachable to a cable, the mechanical hub comprising:

an outer shell that surrounds a cable;

tiles that are spaced to surround the circumference of the cable; and

screws that connect the tiles to the outer shell and that are translatable to vary an angle of the tile with respected to an x-y axis of the cable and to alter the distance the tiles are from the cable.

2. The mechanical hub of claim 1 , wherein altering the distance changes the characteristics of the signals that are transmitted on the cable.

3. The mechanical hub of claim 1 , wherein the inductance of the cable is altered when the screws are moved.

4. The mechanical hub of claim 1 , wherein the screws are translated with a screwdriver.

5. The mechanical hub of claim 1 , wherein the cable is a communication cable.

6. The mechanical hub of claim 1 , wherein the cable is a power cable.

7. The mechanical hub of claim 1 , wherein mechanical hub is removable from the cable.

8. A mechanical hub attachable to a cable, the mechanical hub comprising:

an outer shell that surrounds a cable; and

tiles that are spaced to surround the circumference of the cable, wherein the tiles are between the cable and the outer shell, which is rotatable to alter the distance the tiles are from the cable in response to one or more fasteners that alter the distance between the tiles and the cable.

9. The mechanical hub of claim 8 , wherein rotating the outer shell alters the distance between the cable and the tiles.

10. The mechanical hub of claim 9 , wherein characteristics of the signals that are transmitted on the cable change based on the altered distances.

11. The mechanical hub of claim 8 , wherein the impedance of the cable is altered when the outer shell is rotated.

12. The mechanical hub of claim 8 , wherein the outer shell may be rotated with a hand turn.

13. The mechanical hub of claim 12 , wherein the outer shell may be a helix that changes distance in response to one or more hand turns.

14. The mechanical hub of claim 8 , wherein the cable is a communication cable.

15. The mechanical hub of claim 8 , wherein the cable is a power cable.

16. The mechanical hub of claim 8 , wherein mechanical hub is removable from the cable.

17. A mechanical hub attachable to a cable, the mechanical hub comprising:

an outer shell that surrounds a cable; and

tiles that are spaced to surround the circumference of the cable, wherein the tiles are placed between the outer shell and the cable such that a translation of the outer shell alters the distance between the tiles and the cable in response to one or more screws that alter the distance between the tiles and the cable.

18. The mechanical hub of claim 17 , wherein the one or more screws connect to the tiles through the outer shell.

19. The mechanical hub of claim 17 , wherein the outer shell is configured as a helix that alters the distance between the tiles and the cable in response to one or more hand turns.
