Abstract

A cleat for footwear. The cleat includes a base layer that attaches to the outsole of the footwear, a cushioning layer and a traction element layer. The traction element layer is attached to the base layer solely by the cushioning layer. Each of the cleat layers provides friction with the ground when the cleat engages the ground. The durometer of the base layer and the durometer of the traction element layer are greater than the durometer of the cushioning layer. When a user steps on a surface wearing a shoe outfitted with these cleats, the resilience of the cushioning layer at once both lessens the impact of the traction elements on the ground surface and lessens the reaction force on the user's foot transmitted through the shoe's outsole. The user's comfort is thereby enhanced.

Claims (31)

1. A ground-engaging cleat for a shoe, comprising:

a base layer having a top surface and a bottom surface;

a cushioning layer having a top surface attached to the bottom surface of the base layer; and

a traction element layer having a top surface attached to the bottom surface of the cushioning layer, the traction element layer comprising a plurality of flexible projections;

wherein at least a portion of the bottom surface of the cushioning layer is concave or convex.

2. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 1 wherein the cleat includes a shoe attachment element.

3. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 2 wherein the base layer of the cleat includes the shoe attachment element.

4. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 1 wherein the durometer of the traction element layer is not less than 80 on the Shore A scale.

5. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 1 wherein a thickness of the cushioning layer at the periphery of the cleat is larger than a thickness at the center of the cleat.

6. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 1 wherein a thickness of the cushioning layer at the periphery of the cleat is the same a thickness at the center of the cleat.

7. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 1 wherein the concave or convex portion of the bottom surface of the cushioning layer is at the periphery of the cleat.

8. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 1 wherein the bottom surface of the base layer is substantially flat.

9. A ground-engaging cleat for a shoe, comprising:

a base layer having a top surface and a bottom surface;

a cushioning layer having a top surface attached to the bottom surface of the base layer; and

a traction element layer having a top surface attached to the bottom surface of the cushioning layer, the traction element layer comprising a plurality of flexible projections;

wherein at least a portion of the bottom surface of the cushioning layer forms an angle with the bottom surface of the base layer.

10. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 9 wherein the cleat includes a shoe attachment element.

11. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 10 wherein the base layer of the cleat includes the shoe attachment element.

12. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 9 wherein the durometer of the traction element layer is not less than 80 on the Shore A scale.

13. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 9 wherein the portion of the bottom surface of the cushioning layer which forms an angle with the portion of the bottom surface of the base layer is at the periphery of the cleat.

14. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 9 wherein the bottom surface of the base layer is substantially flat.

15. A ground-engaging cleat for a shoe, comprising:

a base layer characterized by a top surface and a bottom surface;

a cushioning layer having a top surface attached to the bottom surface of the base layer; and

a traction element layer having a top surface attached to the bottom surface of the cushioning layer, the traction element layer comprising a plurality of flexible projections;

wherein a thickness of the cushioning layer at the periphery of the cleat is larger than a thickness at the center of the cleat.

16. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 15 wherein the cleat includes a shoe attachment element.

17. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 16 wherein the base layer of the cleat includes the shoe attachment element.

18. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 15 wherein the durometer of the traction element layer is not less than 80 on the Shore A scale.

19. A ground-engaging cleat according to claim 15 wherein the bottom surface of the base layer is substantially flat.
