Abstract

Systems and methods of operating a communication session control server. A first communication session initiation message is received from a first communication terminal, the first communication session initiation message indicating a second communication terminal with which the first communication terminal is requesting a communication session. A second communication session initiation message is sent to the second communication terminal, the second communication session initiation message indicating a delay to be used by the second communication terminal to determine when to initiate an alerting process.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising associating a predetermined delay with the second communication terminal at the communication session control server, wherein sending the second communication session initiation message indicating the delay to be used by the second communication terminal comprises sending the second communication session initiation message indicating the predetermined delay.

3. The method of claim 2 , comprising storing respective predetermined delays in association with communication terminal identities at the communication session control server.

4. The method of claim 2 , comprising storing respective predetermined delays in association with groups of communication terminal identities at the communication session control server.

5. The method of claim 2 , comprising:

receiving signalling from the second communication terminal at the communication session control server, the received signalling indicating a time interval from initiation of the alerting process at the second communication terminal to a user response to the alerting process at the second communication terminal; and

determining the predetermined delay to be used by the second communication terminal for a future communication session based, at least in part, on the time interval indicated by the received signalling.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining the predetermined delay to be used by the second communication terminal for the future communication session based, at least in part, on the time interval indicated by the received signalling comprises adjusting a respective predetermined delay previously stored at the communication session control server based on the time interval indicated by the received signalling.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein adjusting the respective predetermined delay previously stored at the communication session control server based on the time interval indicated by the received signalling comprises increasing the respective predetermined delay when it is determined that the user responds to the alerting process at the second communication terminal before a communication session setup to the second communication terminal is complete.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein adjusting the respective predetermined delay previously stored at the communication session control server based on the time interval indicated by the received signalling comprises decreasing the respective predetermined delay when it is determined that the user responds to the alerting process at the second communication terminal after the communication session setup to the second communication terminal is complete.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein:

receiving the signalling from the second communication terminal at the communication session control server comprises receiving signalling indicating respective time intervals from the initiation of the alerting process at the second communication terminal to the user response to the alerting process at the second communication terminal for multiple communication sessions; and

determining the predetermined delay to be used by the second communication terminal for a future communication session based, at least in part, on the time interval indicated by the received signalling comprises determining the predetermined delay based on the respective time intervals for the multiple communication sessions.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein:

receiving the signalling from the second communication terminal at the communication session control server comprises receiving signalling indicating respective contexts for the multiple communication sessions; and

determining the predetermined delay to be used by the second communication terminal for the future communication session comprises determining a respective predetermined delay for each respective context to be used for future communication sessions having that respective context.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein each respective context is at least one of:

time of day;

day of week;

weekday versus weekend; and

current user interaction with the communication terminal.

12. A communication session control server, comprising at least one processor and at least one storage element storing instructions for execution by the at least one processor, the instructions comprising instructions executable:

to receive a first communication session initiation message from a first communication terminal, the first communication session initiation message indicating a second communication terminal with which the first communication terminal is requesting a communication session; and

to send a second communication session initiation message to the second communication terminal, the second communication session initiation message indicating a delay to be used by the second communication terminal to determine when to initiate an alerting process.

13. The communication session control server of claim 12 , wherein the instructions comprise instructions executable to associate a predetermined delay with the second communication terminal at the communication session control server, wherein the instructions are executable to send the second communication session initiation message indicating the delay to be used by the second communication terminal comprises instructions executable to send the second communication session initiation message indicating the predetermined delay.

14. The communication session control server of claim 13 , wherein the instructions comprise instructions executable to store respective predetermined delays in association with communication terminal identities at the communication session control server.

15. The communication session control server of claim 13 , wherein the instructions comprise instructions executable to store respective predetermined delays in association with groups of communication terminal identities at the communication session control server.

16. The communication session control server of claim 13 , wherein the instructions comprise instructions executable:

to receive signalling from the second communication terminal at the communication session control server, the received signalling indicating a time interval from initiation of the alerting process at the second communication terminal to a user response to the alerting process at the second communication terminal; and

to determine the predetermined delay to be used by the second communication terminal for a future communication session based, at least in part, on the time interval indicated by the received signalling.

17. The communication session control server of claim 16 , wherein the instructions executable to determine the predetermined delay to be used by the second communication terminal for the future communication session based, at least in part, on the time interval indicated by the received signalling comprise instructions executable to adjust a respective predetermined delay previously stored at the communication session control server based on the time interval indicated by the received signalling.

18. The communication session control server of claim 17 , wherein the instructions executable to adjust the respective predetermined delay previously stored at the communication session control server based on the time interval indicated by the received signalling comprise instructions executable to increase the respective predetermined delay when it is determined that the user responds to the alerting process at the second communication terminal before communication session setup to the second communication terminal is complete.
