Abstract

A connector assembly having a housing and a shaft; at least a groove in the housing or on the shaft; one of the housing and the shaft has a first component and a second component; there being at least a first groove configuration and a second groove configuration resulting from two different relative positions of the first and second components; the first and second groove configurations resulting in a first insertion force and a first removal force of the shaft into and from the housing and a second insertion force and a second removal force of the shaft into and from the housing, respectively.

Claims (35)

1. A connector assembly comprising:

a housing comprising a first housing component comprising a bore and an inner surface and a second housing component aligned with said first housing component along a longitudinal axis of said housing and at least partially surrounding said first housing component;

a shaft comprising an outer surface;

the inner surface of the first housing component comprising a housing groove having a first housing groove size in a first groove configuration prior to insertion of said shaft into said bore and said outer surface of the shaft comprising a shaft groove;

a spring located in the shaft groove or the housing groove;

a first shaft insertion force to engage said shaft with said housing and capturing said spring between said shaft groove and said housing groove and a first shaft removal force to disengage said shaft from said housing in the first groove configuration with said first housing groove size;

wherein a second groove configuration having a second housing groove size is provided by movement of said first housing component into said second housing component, said second housing groove size is smaller than said first housing groove size; and

wherein a second shaft insertion force to engage said shaft with said housing and capturing said spring between said shaft groove and said housing groove and a second shaft removal force to disengage said shaft from said housing in said second groove configuration are greater than said first shaft insertion force and said first shaft removal force, respectively.

2. The connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first housing component comprises elongated openings intersecting the first groove and defining elongated collapsible portions; wherein the second housing component at least partially surrounds said elongated collapsible portions and biases the elongated collapsible portions inwardly with respect to the longitudinal axis in the first groove configuration.

3. The connector assembly of claim 2 , wherein the spring is a canted coil spring and the first and second housing components are sprung together.

4. The connector assembly of claim 2 , wherein the spring is a helical spring, a ribbon spring or a cantilever spring, and the first and second housing components are sprung together.

5. The connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first housing component comprises a first subcomponent and a second subcomponent, relative movement of said first and second subcomponents along the longitudinal axis being restrained by a biasing member.

6. The connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first housing component has a first end inside the second housing component and a second end extending outside the second housing component in the first groove configuration.

7. The connector assembly of claim 6 , wherein the second end of the first housing component has an enlarged end abutting against an open end of the second housing component.

8. The connector assembly of claim 7 , wherein the second housing component has a partially closed end comprising an opening, and the first end of the first housing component extends out the opening in the first groove configuration and the second groove configuration.

9. The connector assembly of claim 8 , wherein the second housing component has a generally constant internal diameter extending from the open end to the partially closed end.

10. The connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the shaft defines a passage extending through the shaft.

11. The connector assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a seal located in an annular space between the shaft and the housing.

12. The connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the spring is a canted coil spring located in a first common groove defined by the housing groove and the shaft groove in the first groove configuration and in a second common groove defined by the housing groove and the shaft groove in the second groove configuration.

13. The connector assembly of claim 12 , wherein the canted coil spring is located in the housing groove and the shaft groove in the first groove configuration before the first housing component and the shaft are movable together into the second housing component.

14. The connector assembly of claim 12 , wherein the housing groove comprises a bottom wall; the canted coil spring is spaced from the bottom wall and configured to expand upon insertion of the shaft into the first housing component or the canted coil spring contacts the bottom wall of the housing groove and configured to rotate to accommodate the outer surface of the shaft upon insertion of the shaft into the first housing component.

15. A method of using a connector assembly comprising:

inserting a pin comprising a tapered insertion end and a pin groove into a bore of a housing comprising a housing groove having a first housing groove size;

rotating a spring located in the pin groove or the housing groove;

trapping the spring in a common groove defined by the pin groove and the housing groove in a first latched state;

activating the pin or the housing while the spring is in the common groove to change the connector assembly from the first latched state to a second latched state, the spring remaining in the common groove in the second latched state;

wherein said activating step comprises moving a first housing component of the housing axially into a second housing component of the housing to change the housing groove from the first housing groove size to a second housing groove size, which is smaller than the first housing groove size, or moving at least two pin components of the pin axially relative to one another; and

wherein a disconnect force at said second latched state is higher than a disconnect force at said first latched state.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising deflecting a plurality of collapsible members on the housing in moving between the first latched state and the second latched state.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising a second spring located in an annular space between the two pin components or between the two housing components.

18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising reducing a dimension of the pin groove from a first dimension to a smaller second dimension.

19. The method of claim 15 , further comprising sealing an area between the pin and the bore of the housing.

20. The method of claim 15 , further comprising abutting an enlarged end of the first housing component against an open end of the second housing component.

21. The method of claim 15 , wherein the housing groove comprises a bottom wall; the spring is spaced from the bottom wall and configured to expand upon insertion of the pin into the bore of the housing or the spring contacts the bottom wall of the housing groove and configured to rotate to accommodate the outer surface of the pin upon insertion of the pin into the bore of the housing.

22. The method of claim 15 , wherein the spring is a canted coil spring.
