Abstract

Certain embodiments described herein are directed to a torch that includes a lanthanide or actinide material. In some embodiments, the torch can include one or more other materials in combination with the lanthanide or actinide material. In some embodiments, the torch can comprise cerium, terbium or thorium. In other embodiments, the torch can comprise a lanthanide or actinide material comprising a melting point higher than the melting point of quartz.

Claims (20)

1. A torch comprising an outer tube configured to sustain an atomization source in the outer tube, the torch outer tube comprising an inlet end within a first section of the torch outer tube and an exit end within a second section of the torch outer tube, in which the torch is configured to desolvate sample at the first section of the torch outer tube and to sustain an atomization source within the second section of the torch outer tube, in which the first section and the second section of the torch outer tube are coupled to each other through at least one material, in which the first section of the torch outer tube comprises a non-refractory material, and in which the exit end of the outer tube comprises at least one lanthanide or actinide material, and in which the material coupling the first section and the second section is different than the non-refractory material of the first section and the at least one lanthanide or actinide material of the exit end of the outer tube.

2. The torch of claim 1 , in which the lanthanide or actinide material is coated onto the exit end of the torch outer tube.

3. The torch of claim 1 , in which the lanthanide or actinide material is present in an effective length along a longitudinal dimension of the second section of the torch outer tube.

4. The torch of claim 3 , in which the lanthanide or actinide material is present in an effective thickness at the exit end of the torch outer tube.

5. The torch of claim 1 , in which the entire second section of the torch outer tube comprises the lanthanide or actinide material.

6. The torch of claim 5 , in which the torch outer tube comprises an opening within the second section comprising the lanthanide or actinide material that is configured to receive an optically transparent material.

7. The torch of claim 1 , in which the torch further comprises an inner tube within the outer tube.

8. The torch of claim 1 , in which a lanthanide or actinide material is present on the inner tube.

9. The torch of claim 1 , in which the outer tube comprises a non-lanthanide or non-actinide material in the first section and the lanthanide or actinide material in the second section.

10. The torch of claim 1 , in which the torch outer tube comprises a substantially constant diameter along a longitudinal dimension of the torch outer tube and the lanthanide or actinide material of the second section and the non-refractory material of the first section are coupled to each other with an adhesive or cement.

11. The torch of claim 1 , in which the torch outer tube comprises a substantially constant diameter along a longitudinal dimension of the torch outer tube and the lanthanide or actinide material of the second section and the non-refractory material of the first section are fused to each other.

12. The torch of claim 1 , in which the torch outer tube comprises a substantially constant diameter along a longitudinal dimension of the torch outer tube and the lanthanide or actinide material of the second section and the non-refractory material of the first section are coupled to each other through a frit or a ground glass joint.

13. The torch of claim 9 , in which the torch further comprises an inner tube within the outer tube, in which the inner tube comprises a non-lanthanide or non-actinide material at an entrance end and a lanthanide or actinide material at an exit end of the inner tube.

14. The torch of claim 13 , in which the non-lanthanide or non-actinide material of the inner tube and the lanthanide or actinide material of the inner tube are coupled to each other with an adhesive or cement.

15. The torch of claim 13 , in which the non-lanthanide or non-actinide material of the inner tube and the lanthanide or actinide material of the inner tube are fused to each other.

16. The torch of claim 13 , in which the non-lanthanide or non-actinide material of the inner tube and the lanthanide or actinide material of the inner tube are coupled to each other through a frit or a ground glass joint.

17. The torch of claim 13 , in which the inner tube comprises an optically transparent window.

18. The torch of claim 17 , in which the optically transparent window is configured to permit visual observation of an atomization source within the inner tube.

19. The torch of claim 17 , in which the optically transparent window is configured to pass visible light.

20. The torch of claim 1 , in which the lanthanide material is cerium or terbium, the actinide material is thorium, or the lanthanide or actinide material is any lanthanide or actinide that has a working temperature greater than 750 degrees Celsius.
