Abstract

Embodiments are provided for communicating notifications and other textual data associated with applications installed on an electronic device. According to certain aspects, a user can interface with an input device to send ( 218 ) a wake up trigger to the electronic device. The electronic device retrieves ( 222 ) application notifications and converts ( 288 ) the application notifications to audio data. The electronic device also sends ( 230 ) the audio data to an audio output device for annunciation ( 232 ). The user may also use the input device to send ( 242 ) a request to the electronic device to activate the display screen. The electronic device identifies ( 248 ) an application corresponding to an annunciated notification, and activates ( 254 ) the display screen and initiates the application.

Claims (75)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

while a display associated with a mobile device is operating in a low-power state:

receiving, the mobile computing device, data indicating a selection of a command for outputting stored audio notifications,

in response to receiving the data indicating the selection of the command for communicating stored audio notifications:

selecting, from among a set of one or more stored audio notifications, a particular audio notification, and

providing the particular audio notification for output, and

receiving data indicating a selection of a command for activating the display and invoking an application associated with a currently-output or recently-output audio notification; and

in response to receiving the data indicating the selection of the command for activating the display and invoking an application associated with a currently-output or recently-output audio notification:

identifying a particular application that is associated with the particular audio notification,

activating the display associated with the mobile computing device, and

invoking the particular application.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the particular audio notification for output comprises:

providing, to an audio output device that is separate from the mobile computing device, the particular audio notification for output.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the particular audio notification for output comprises:

generating speech synthesized audio data corresponding to the particular audio notification; and

providing, for output, the speech synthesized audio data.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data indicating a selection of a command for activating the display and outputting stored audio notifications is generated in response to receiving a user selection associated with the command.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the user selection is associated with an audio command.

6. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

in further response to receiving the data indicating the selection of the command for communicating the stored audio notifications:

identifying data that corresponds to the particular application and the particular audio notification,

generating speech synthesized audio data corresponding to the data, and

providing, for output, the speech synthesized audio data.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving data indicating a selection of a command for activating the display and invoking an application associated with a currently-output or recently-output audio notification comprises:

receiving, from an audio output device, data to select the currently-output or recently-output audio notification.

8. A system comprising:

one or more computers and one or more storage devices storing instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more computers, to cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

while a display associated with a mobile device is operating in a low-power state:

receiving, the mobile computing device, data indicating a selection of a command for outputting stored audio notifications,

in response to receiving the data indicating the selection of the command for communicating stored audio notifications:

selecting, from among a set of one or more stored audio notifications, a particular audio notification, and

providing the particular audio notification for output, and

receiving data indicating a selection of a command for activating the display and invoking an application associated with a currently-output or recently-output audio notification; and

in response to receiving the data indicating the selection of the command for activating the display and invoking an application associated with a currently-output or recently-output audio notification:

identifying a particular application that is associated with the particular audio notification,

activating the display associated with the mobile computing device, and

invoking the particular application.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein providing the particular audio notification for output comprises:

providing, to an audio output device that is separate from the mobile computing device, the particular audio notification for output.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein providing the particular audio notification for output comprises:

generating speech synthesized audio data corresponding to the particular audio notification; and

providing, for output, the speech synthesized audio data.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the data indicating a selection of a command for activating the display and outputting stored audio notifications is generated in response to receiving a user selection associated with the command.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the user selection is associated with an audio command.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise:

in further response to receiving the data indicating the selection of the command for communicating the stored audio notifications:

identifying data that corresponds to the particular application and the particular audio notification,

generating speech synthesized audio data corresponding to the data, and

providing, for output, the speech synthesized audio data.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein receiving data indicating a selection of a command for activating the display and invoking an application associated with a currently-output or recently-output audio notification comprises:

receiving, from an audio output device, data to select the currently-output or recently-output audio notification.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing software comprising instructions executable by one or more computers which, upon such execution, cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

while a display associated with a mobile device is operating in a low-power state:

receiving, the mobile computing device, data indicating a selection of a command for outputting stored audio notifications,

in response to receiving the data indicating the selection of the command for communicating stored audio notifications:

selecting, from among a set of one or more stored audio notifications, a particular audio notification, and

providing the particular audio notification for output, and

receiving data indicating a selection of a command for activating the display and invoking an application associated with a currently-output or recently-output audio notification; and

in response to receiving the data indicating the selection of the command for activating the display and invoking an application associated with a currently-output or recently-output audio notification:

identifying a particular application that is associated with the particular audio notification,

activating the display associated with the mobile computing device, and

invoking the particular application.

16. The medium of claim 15 , wherein providing the particular audio notification for output comprises:

providing, to an audio output device that is separate from the mobile computing device, the particular audio notification for output.

17. The medium of claim 15 , wherein providing the particular audio notification for output comprises:

generating speech synthesized audio data corresponding to the particular audio notification; and

providing, for output, the speech synthesized audio data.

18. The medium of claim 15 , wherein the data indicating a selection of a command for activating the display and outputting stored audio notifications is generated in response to receiving a user selection associated with the command.

19. The medium of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

in further response to receiving the data indicating the selection of the command for communicating the stored audio notifications:

identifying data that corresponds to the particular application and the particular audio notification,

generating speech synthesized audio data corresponding to the data, and

providing, for output, the speech synthesized audio data.

20. The medium of claim 15 , wherein receiving data indicating a selection of a command for activating the display and invoking an application associated with a currently-output or recently-output audio notification comprises:

receiving, from an audio output device, data to select the currently-output or recently-output audio notification.
