Delivery of apparatus and methods for vertebrostenting
View Patent ↗The present invention generally is directed toward a spinal fixation system whereby a coupling element allows the physician to selectively lock or unlock either the connection between the coupling element and a fastener, such as to allow for repositioning of the coupling element, or the connection between the coupling element and an elongate rod. The locking or unlocking of these connections may be made independently and as desired by the physician.
1. A surgical method comprising:
creating a pathway to a vertebral body;
forming a curved pathway in the vertebral body using a curved drill;
enlarging the curved pathway to form an enlarged cavity in the vertebral body using a reamer;
inserting a stent via a stent delivery system into the enlarged cavity, wherein the stent delivery system comprises a sheath extended over the stent, wherein the stent comprises a co-braided structure that is self-expandable and collapsible within the sheath; and
removing the sheath from the stent to deploy and expand the stent, wherein the stent expands on its own within the vertebral body without the use of a filler material, and simultaneously moving forward the stent to compensate for any foreshortening of the stent during removal of the sheath.
2. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the stent includes at least one hole allowing filler material to leave the interior of the stent.
3. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the stent includes at least two holes for providing regions of differing permeability.
4. The surgical method of claim 1 , further comprising inserting filling material into the stent.
5. The surgical method of claim 4 , wherein inserting filling material into the stent comprises attaching a syringe to a proximal end of the stent delivery system.
6. The surgical method of claim 5 , wherein the filling material comprises cement.
7. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the stent delivery system comprises a shaft and a sliding mechanism to allow for extension and retraction of the stent along the axis of the shaft.
8. A surgical method comprising:
creating a pathway to a vertebral body;
forming a cavity in the vertebral body using a drill;
inserting a stent via a stent delivery system into the enlarged cavity, wherein the stent delivery system comprises a sheath extended over the stent, wherein the stent comprises a co-braided structure that is self-expandable and collapsible within the sheath; and
removing the sheath from the stent to deploy and expand the stent, wherein the stent expands on its own within the vertebral body without the use of a filler material, and simultaneously moving forward the stent to compensate for any foreshortening of the stent during removal of the sheath.
9. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the stent comprises one or more porous regions that allow for controlled or direct distribution of filler material.
10. The surgical method of claim 9 , wherein the stent comprises an inlet hole for receiving filler material therethrough.
11. The surgical method of claim 10 , wherein the total cross-sectional area of the one or more porous regions exceeds that of the cement inlet hole.
12. The surgical method of claim 8 , wherein the drill is curvable.
13. The surgical method of claim 8 , further comprising inserting a reamer to enlarge the cavity.
14. A surgical method comprising:
creating a pathway to a vertebral body;
forming a cavity in the vertebral body using a drill;
inserting a stent via a stent delivery system into the enlarged cavity, wherein the stent delivery system comprises a sheath, wherein the stent comprises a co-braided structure that is self-expandable and collapsible within the sheath; and
deploying and expanding the stent from the stent delivery system by removing the sheath, wherein the stent expands on its own within the vertebral body without the use of a filler material, and simultaneously moving forward the stent to compensate for any foreshortening of the stent during removal of the sheath.
15. The surgical method of claim 14 , wherein the stent comprises one or more porous regions that allow for controlled or direct distribution of filler material.
16. The surgical method of claim 14 , wherein the stent comprises an inlet hole for receiving filler material therethrough.
17. The surgical method of claim 16 , wherein the total cross-sectional area of the one or more porous regions exceeds that of the cement inlet hole.
18. The surgical method of claim 14 , wherein the drill is curvable.
19. The surgical method of claim 14 , further comprising inserting a reamer to enlarge the cavity.
20. The surgical method of claim 19 , wherein the reamer is curvable.
