Dynamic spinal implants incorporating cartilage bearing graft material
A dynamic spinal implant utilizes cartilage bearing graft material in dynamic disc replacement and/or facet arthroplasty. Methods and apparatus for dynamic spinal implants incorporate bulk articular graft tissues derived from donor joint sources in human (allograft or autograft) or non-human (xenograft) tissue. The donor joint is preferably prepared as a biological dynamic spinal implant with articular cartilage as a bearing interface between adjacent bone surfaces that naturally articulate with respect to one another.
1. An implant assembly for use in spinal surgery, comprising:
an intervertebral implant constructed of human allograft bone tissue, the implant having a body with upper and lower fixation surfaces adapted to abut at least partially resected surfaces of opposing vertebral bodies, the implant further including a keying feature protruding outwardly from at least one of the fixation surfaces and having an aperture therethrough, wherein the keying feature is adapted to be inserted into a prepared opening intersecting one of the resected surfaces and a foot print of the implant is sized such that the implant is positioned entirely within a foot print of the opposing vertebral bodies;
a fixation element having an external threaded portion, the fixation element further having a cannulated opening extending longitudinally through the fixation element and a plurality of fenestrations extending from the external threaded portion to the cannulated opening to provide a pathway through which a flowable material can be introduced into the fixation element through the cannulated opening and flow out of the screw through the fenestrations, and wherein the fixation element is adapted to be inserted through the aperture of the keying feature of the intervertebral implant to compressively interconnect the intervertebral implant against the one of the resected surfaces.
2. The implant assembly of claim 1 , wherein the fixation element is comprised of human cortical bone tissue.
3. The implant assembly of claim 1 , wherein the flowable material is selected from the group consisting of: bone cement, morselized graft bone, osteobiologic slurry, ceramic materials, antibiotic compounds, a polylactic acid based compound and a polyglycolic acid based compound.
4. The implant assembly of claim 1 , wherein the fixation element is a bone screw.
5. The implant assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a compression face feature adapted to be mated with the keying feature of the intervertebral implant, the compression face feature including at least one fenestration extending to the cannulated opening.
6. The implant assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cannulated opening extends partially through a length of the fixation element.
7. The implant assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cannulated opening extends through an entire length of the fixation element.
8. The implant assembly of claim 1 , wherein the threaded portion including threads having a curved undercut portion.
