Abstract

Digital content distribution systems and methods are provided for distributing for digital data files, such as digital audio and video data files. In accordance with one implementation, a token-based authentication system is provided that does not require knowledge of the individual user requesting the download of digital content data or real-time access to user account information. Instead, the token-based authentication system embeds the authentication information, or token, in the download request information itself. In this way, the download or content server authenticates the download request using the token contained in the download request information and therefore does not require any additional information to carry out this authentication, such as access to user account information.

Claims (42)

1. A token-based system for distributing digital content, the token-based system comprising:

a memory device that stores a set of instructions;

at least one processor that executes the set of instructions;

a token generator, executing on the at least one processor, that generates a plurality of tokens and distributes the tokens to one or more servers, the tokens including a first token and a second token;

an application server that;

receives the second token distributed by the token generator,

encodes the second token,

generates, in response to a first download request for digital content from a client, a download address of the digital content using the encoded second token and at least one of a content file name or content identifier, and

provides the download address to the client; and

a content server that:

receives the first token distributed by the token generator,

encodes the first token,

receives, from the client, a second download request including the download address,

extracts the encoded second token from the received download address, and

authenticates the second download request by comparing the encoded first token with the encoded second token.

2. The token-based system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the content server stores the digital content.

3. The token-based system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the content server authenticates the second download request when the encoded second token matches the encoded first token.

4. The token-based system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the tokens comprise alphanumeric strings.

5. The token-based system as recited in claim 4 , wherein the alphanumeric strings are randomly generated.

6. The token-based system as recited in claim 4 , wherein at least one alphanumeric string has a predetermined length.

7. The token-based system as recited in claim 4 , wherein at least one alphanumeric string has a random length.

8. The token-based system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the tokens are configured with a predetermined expiration time.

9. The token-based system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the token generator encrypts the tokens before distributing them to the one or more servers.

10. The token-based system as recited in claim 9 , wherein the one or more servers decrypts the tokens after receiving them from the token generator.

11. A process for distributing digital content, the process comprising the following operations performed by one or more processors:

transmitting a first token to a content server that stores the digital content;

transmitting, to an application server, a first download request for downloading digital content requested by a client;

transmitting the first token to the application server;

generating, by the application server, a second token by encoding the first token;

receiving, by the application server, the first download request from the client;

generating a download address of the digital content requested by the client using the second token and at least one of a content file name or content identifier and transmitting the download address to the client, download address including the second token;

receiving, by the client, the download address and transmitting a second download request to the content server, the second download request including the download address; and

receiving, by the content server, the second download request, extracting the second token from the download address, encoding the first token, comparing the second token with the encoded first token, and authenticating the second download request when the second token matches the encoded first token.

12. The process as recited in claim 11 , further including:

encrypting the first token before distributing the token to the content server.

13. The process as recited in claim 11 , wherein the first token distributed to the content server comprises an alphanumeric string.

14. The process as recited in claim 13 , wherein the alphanumeric string is randomly generated.

15. The process as recited in claim 13 , wherein the alphanumeric string has a predetermined length.

16. The process as recited in claim 13 , wherein the alphanumeric string has a random length.

17. The process as recited in claim 13 , wherein the first token has a predetermined expiration time.

18. The process as recited in claim 11 , further including:

transmitting an acknowledgement after receiving the transmitted first token.
