Abstract

Disclosed is a closure catheter, for closing a tissue opening such as an atrial septal defect, patent foreman ovale, or the left atrial appendage of the heart. The closure catheter carries a plurality of tissue anchors, which may be deployed into tissue surrounding the opening, and used to draw the opening closed. Methods are also disclosed.

Claims (19)

1. A method of reducing passage of material through an opening in the heart, comprising:

positioning a clamp adjacent an opening,

wherein the clamp has a first expanded radial extent and a second reduced radial extent; and

securing the clamp at one or more locations surrounding and proximal to the opening,

wherein the securing step includes advancing, proximally through tissue adjacent to and radially outward of the opening, a plurality of anchors each having a suture attached thereto and advancing the clamp distally relative to the sutures attached to the anchors thereby reducing the radial extent of the opening,

further wherein the securing step secures the sutures attached to the anchors to the clamp.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a patch is adapted to be positioned across the opening as the clamp is advanced distally.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the patch is a fabric patch.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the patch is automatically unfolded and positioned across the opening.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the patch is initially releasably attached to a delivery catheter.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sutures attached to the anchors are joined into a single suture.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the sutures attached to the anchors are joined into a single suture proximal of the clamp to which they are secured.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the sutures attached to the anchors are joined into a single suture distal of the clamp and are secured to the clamp by the single suture.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein advancing the clamp distally relative to the sutures attached to the anchors is accompanied by the clamp moving from the first expanded radial extent to the second reduced radial extent.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the clamp is biased toward the second reduced radial extent.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the clamp is selected from the group consisting of an elastic band, a ligating band, an adhesive, a shape memory alloy, and clips.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of severing one or more of the sutures.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of anchors are initially advanced proximally through tissue adjacent to the opening in a circular pattern.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of anchors are initially advanced proximally through tissue adjacent to the opening in a non-circular pattern.
