Abstract

Methods and systems for providing crosstalk compensation in a jack are disclosed. According to one method, the crosstalk compensation is adapted to compensate for undesired crosstalk generated at a capacitive coupling located at a plug inserted within the jack. The method includes positioning a first capacitive coupling a first time delay away from the capacitive coupling of the plug, the first capacitive coupling having a greater magnitude and an opposite polarity as compared to the capacitive coupling of the plug. The method also includes positioning a second capacitive coupling at a second time delay from the first capacitive coupling, the second time delay corresponding to an average time delay that optimizes near end crosstalk. The second capacitive coupling has generally the same overall magnitude but an opposite polarity as compared to the first capacitive coupling, and includes two capacitive elements spaced at different time delays from the first capacitive coupling.

Claims (21)

1. A crosstalk compensation system within a telecommunications jack, the system comprising:

a housing having a front piece and a rear piece configured to interconnect, the front piece defining a front port;

a circuit board disposed between the front and rear pieces of the housing, the circuit board including a plurality of layers separated by dielectric material and defining a plurality of vias extending between the layers;

a plurality of contact springs electrically coupled to a plurality of insulation displacement contacts; and

a crosstalk compensation arrangement that provides crosstalk compensation within the telecommunications jack as signals are transmitted between the contact springs and the insulation displacement contacts, the crosstalk compensation arrangement including a first plurality of capacitive plates arranged at a first of the layers of the circuit board and a second plurality of capacitive plates arranged at a second of the layers of the circuit board, at least one of the capacitive plates of the second layer having a perimeter defining a recess that follows a contour of a respective one of the vias to provide a gap between the at least one capacitive plate and the respective one of the vias.

2. The crosstalk compensation system of claim 1 , wherein the recess contours to provide a generally constant gap between the at least one capacitive plate and the respective one of the vias.

3. The crosstalk compensation system of claim 1 , wherein the capactive plates are generally rectangular.

4. A crosstalk compensation system within a telecommunications jack, the system comprising:

a housing having a front piece and a rear piece configured to interconnect, the front piece defining a front port;

a circuit board disposed between the front and rear pieces of the housing, the circuit board including a first and second layers separated by a dielectric material, the circuit board defining a plurality of vias extending between the first and second layers;

a plurality of wire termination contacts and contact springs electrically connected together; and

a crosstalk compensation arrangement that provides crosstalk compensation within the telecommunications jack as signals are transmitted between the contact springs and the insulation displacement contacts, the crosstalk compensation arrangement including a first capacitive plate arranged at the first layer of the circuit board and a second capacitive plate arranged at the second layer of the circuit board, the first and second capacitive plates being separated by the dielectric material and being positioned to oppose one another, the first capacitive plate being electrically isolated from a first of the vias and being electrically connected to a second of the vias, the second capacitive plate being electrically connected to the first of the vias and being electrically isolated from the second of the vias, the first capacitive plate having a perimeter defining a recess that follows a contour of the first via.

5. The crosstalk compensation system of claim 4 , wherein the recess contours to provide a generally constant gap between the first capacitive plate and the first via.

6. The crosstalk compensation system of claim 4 , wherein the capacitive plates are generally rectangular.

7. A crosstalk compensation system within a telecommunications jack, the system comprising:

a housing having a front piece and a rear piece configured to interconnect, the front piece defining a front port;

a circuit board disposed between the front and rear pieces of the housing, the circuit board including a plurality of layers separated by dielectric material and defining a plurality of vias extending between the layers;

a plurality of wire termination contacts and contact springs electrically connected to each other;

a crosstalk compensation arrangement that provides crosstalk compensation within the telecommunications jack as signals are transmitted between the contact springs and the insulation displacement contacts, the crosstalk compensation arrangement including a plurality of capacitive plates that provide capacitive couplings between selected tracks of the circuit board, at least one of the capacitive plates being integral with a first one of the vias.

8. The crosstalk compensation system of claim 7 , wherein the first via supports one of the contact spring.

9. The crosstalk compensation system of claim 7 , wherein the capacitive plates are generally rectangular.
